Thread: Wave priority

  1. #21
I've been surfing for many years, all over the world, and I have to say that I don't have a very high opinion of other surfers. The majority--not all--, but many, are selfish greedy, pricks. So take the wave, eff 'm. And incidentally, I believe that the rule is that the person closest to the peak, or the breaking part of the wave, has right of way. If the other rider was behind the peak, it might not have been his wave. It's hard to see from the video though.

its clear in the video that he was in the wrong. if you watch closely you can see after he is up there is a surfer already riding to his left and the wave is a right.

you probably need to find another activity. I suggest golf.

You're on a funshape w/ a go-pro and try to educate someone about priority on the beach after dropping in on them at Swami's. Haha.

Go paddle out at north jetty in OB and ask them about priority.

Get over it. There was no need whatsoever to do anything about it.

It is a very bad precedent to set for yourself when you are still developing as a surfer. If this bothers you now you will turn into a grumpy middle aged surfer and we already have too many of those.

Shake it off and move on because it will happen again and again and yet again guaranteed.

Lol, Original Poster... if you're going to be in the wrong you might as well be in the wrong big time!!! this is not a big deal though. Its just part of the surfing experience. But that guy must have been like WTF!!! when you confronted him on the beach.

But in this posters defense... I only watched the video once... But the one documented rule, especially in California to me is this: If you are up first, albeit out of position, technically the guy behind him is a D-Bag... In the video, the posted of this video was up and riding, then about 2 seconds later, you see the late drop behind him... That is a drop in... I mean, this situation has a grey area for sure... I mean, we have all been in a better position, and late dropped while someone is obviously already up and riding... Its just a di** move. Thats all.... Priority is priority, but when a guy is already up and riding, and its obvious, you need to back off. Because if you were in better position, you shoulda BEEN took off!

I know that the rules of surfing have the wave priority written out pretty simply, but that guy behind him is simply a d-bag, especially in a waist him mush burger.... I mean, we call all pump through white water to come out the other side and surf around someone... Thats just not gentleman-like.... I would have told the guy to f*** off too. straight up.

First off...after reviewing your "video evidence" you only looked to the right before you popped up so it's no wonder you didn't see the guy to your left. Don't feel bad though...we've all done this once or twice.

Second...don't expect respect from anyone if you've only been surfing for six months. You earn your place in the lineup.

And finally...be careful who you heckle. Watch this video and take notes...Don't f*** with angry surfers.
