to the op, as others have already said, you were in the wrong, regardless of whether you were "up first". that's not the indicator, positioning is.
It does not matter who is up first. a longboard can catch the shoulder section of a wave before a shortboarder can catch the peak. The shortboarder still has priority, as he is inside and on the critical part of the wave.

Yeah that's true, the ole Fitzpedo is a nasty manuever I wouldn't wanna F with. Plus he sits waaaaaaaay outside so Sunny would definitely lose.
