This place has some sweet waves. It's almost like being in the OBX without all the pesky tourons. used to be good bottom there and it's in the wilderness.
Carolina Beach could always use a little more shark bait...very nice state park a few blocks from the ocean...and if you're traveling in summer (between Memorial Day and Labor Day), is an extraordinarily family-friendly place, including fireworks on the beach every Thursday night, free movies at the lake on Sundays, boardwalk and rides etc etc.
I'll second the suggestion for False Cape in VA ... heading further south on the OBX towards the cape, especially south of the Oregon Inlet, can get a little heavy for your first time out depending on the swell characteristics. Let's just say that while it can be big anywhere along the coast, add a good 2-3ft to the surf at Rodanthe or Hatteras vs. VA Beach.
