Chicharronne is right, but you'll be just another gringo in Puerto. At it's peak, violence didn't scare tourists. Now things are a lot calmer than say, 2 years ago. Be confident you'll be safe as long as you stay in a crowded, tourist town.

If a cheap trip costs you your life, wouldn't that at the very least be an oxymoron....?

nice one yankee. yeah cheap trip and mexico could be negativelly correlated for sure...i suppose unless you go to the "safe" spots i suppose.

im not worried about getting kidnapped or killed by mexican cartels.its dangerous near the borders, and baja.im lookin to go down to oaxaca for a few weeks.i dont want to be another kook going to pr on a surf trip.pr is great, but over the years its more and more crowded.its pointless to go on a surftrip if u go surf a spot that takes 5hrs to get 3 good waves.id rather be out in the middle of nowhere with maybe a few locals surfing some heavy beachbreaks.i speak spanish pretty good too,and i know quite a few mexicanos.they dont surf, and theyre probably some ms13 killers, but they are friendly.people get killed and kidnapped in mexico when they go to tijuana, guadalaja, places like that.everywhere outside of the us is dangerous.u can go to the north shore of oahu, piss off some locals and get found sliced up in a pineapple field.indo is extremely dangerous too,but its a 2000 roundtrip ticket out of ewr.guys go out to africa, another sketchy place.i feel aslong as im not dissrespecting anyone, and not dressed like a total gringo that looks loaded with cash i should be alright.but then again, shyt tends to happen.who knows i might make it down to mexico and end off trading barrels with guys like greg long and mark healy,or i might get kidnapped and beheaded with a chainsaw on fox news.if u dont try, youll spend the rest of your life wondering what could of been!thanks for all the negative feedback

Mexico is what it is. Dangerous? For sure...in certain places. Just like 'merica. Go to the West Side of Chicago and your toast in a seconds. I'm guessing your not taking a trip to Juarez though. I've been to Mex surfing quite a few times. My wife and I took our honeymoon there this year....oaxaca, colima, michoacan. No problems ever and caught some insane waves. One of the best trips of my life. We do both speak Spanish though so that helps. For the guys who stay stay away, no problem. Mexico isn't for everyone. But go with respect and you will get respect. cepriano PM me for some deets.

PR is an awesome place too. Still some adventure and secret spots down there.
