Ok, so I was wondering what are everyone's thoughts on surfing alone when no lifeguards at there. I know this sounds like a problem for little kids, but what's everybody's thoughts. Also what do you think the best age to start surfing alone is?
I started surfing alone when I was 11-12. Its not all that bad and certainly more waves in a days work. To answer your question though, it all depends on your experience in the water. Like what if you kicked out and your leash snaps and you have to swim to shore, its always good to have some experience with the water.
Surfing alone is Stupid with a capital S, regardless of age. All it takes is one little mistake and you knock your head on a rock or your board and you're floating face down in the water with no one to drag you to shore and give you CPR. 100 things can go wrong when you're surfing, and while having other people around isn't a guarantee that you get bailed out, it is a huge advantage.
It's kind of like driving after a few too many adult beverages. Everyone has done it, but that doesn't make it okay. I've been the last guy in the water on many occassions but it always feels sketchy and it's not something I would recommend anyone should do.
1000's of other things can kill ya too. Sometimes it's just not your day.
I never have the patience to herd all the cats together and go surf. I'll let the friends know the couple of spots I'm going to check and if I see them, I'll see them. If not...well, I went to the beach to surf not d1ck around at the store, the parking lot, hit the atm, buy wax, go borrow a leash, etc. I'll chat with them over a beer later on if I don't see them in the water.
I agree with most of you guys with the surfing alone is better. My friends never want to go surfing since they're really not as into it as me. I like to try to get to the beach at least once a day if the waves are surfable, while most of them never answer their phones or want to go. So, I usually don't get to go surf a lot, since my mom won't let me go alone even though I'm almost 13. Anyways not trying to make it a personal conversation. Any ideas on how to persuade her?
Always surf at a guarded beach during proper hours. Please don't surf alone for it is too risky.
Surfing alone all of the time makes you weird and isolated. Take my advice and don't end up like me. If there are no lifeguards present find a large pack of shredders and join 'em. There is saftey in numbers. Plus you may meet some new friends.
There are beaches that let you surf where there is lifegaurds?
Really there is not going to be persuading your mother to let you do it. You are incredibly young. The ocean is an incredibly dangerous place. And it would be wrong for you to convince her or yourself otherwise.
