I have a torn labrum in both hips. I never got the shots I just do some physical therapy and try to manage the pain. Sometimes it acts up after certain activities but usually I can get by with just not doing the thing that get it worked up. I've been doing this for a few years but was thinking about getting the shots at one point. Good luck and let me know how it goes for you.
I am new to the site but have been reading/following for years. I just had hip labrum surgery. I saw Dr. Meyers in Philadelphia & then went to Dr. Struan Coleman in New York. Surgery was conducted at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
I researched this for over 2 years. Proper diagnosis is MRI & then most probably MR-Anthrogram with injection. Labrums don't repair themselves. Without repair more surfing will continue to tear. If you have bony spurs it will accelerate the issue.
Find a way to send private email & I'd be happy to talk with you. As one surfer to another getting the right diagnosis with a specialist is the first & most important step.
Beachkat. Go to a skilled physical therapist that specializes in manual therapy. It is a lot easier said than done to diagnose someone on an Internet forum. It depends on history, moment of injury, and many more factors. If your pain is laterally it could be trochanteric bursitis or an alignment issue causing increased stress to the hip joint. Go to a PT.
everybody just gets hip replacement once they are shot, but though they don't get better, you can try different things.once it hinders/prevents surfing it's time for an x-ray/mri.i've been living with it for 2 1/2 years.
With all due respect to the other posters a PT can't properly diagnose this. The "gold standard" for proper diagnosis is an MR-anthrogram. Additionally plenty of people get their hips scoped (Hip Arthroscopy) without needing hip replacements. Find a doctor that does hip work, has a track record (hundreds of surgeries) and specializes in this area.
The hip & core area is a complicated anatomy. You need a doctor to help sort this out. Google Dr. William Meyers for core. Google dr. Struan Coleman or better yet go to his website at www.struancoleman.com. Great information site.
Thanks and I appreciate the responses. Let me do a better job of getting you guys caught up.
Slight pain in my right hip around late August. Im 40, chalked it up as age and just a little inflamation.
Kept surfing about 1-2x a week until October 12-19 went to Costa Rica ( wanted to cancel, but it wasnt THAT bad, and I couldnt afford to squash plane tickets, etc ). That did it... NOW it really hurts.
Been off of it ever since. Nothing. zip. tried PT, it made it worse.
Saw family dr after... tordol shot and antinflamatories. No dice. Went to ortho last week, MRI, quote ' what looked like a small tear ', ordered cortisone shot Tuesday of next week.
Im following up after shot in 2 weeks, hopefully getting arthro mri with injection and/or PRP injections to try and heal without surgery.
Ive had 2 right and one left rotator cuff surgeries... I KNOW surgery dosent exaclty make you NEW; and the months of downtime.
I guess what I was hoping to hear that there was some hope... that surgery was NOT necessary. At all costs, Id like to exhaust all options for a year.
As far as the surgery goes... How long was it before surfing was comfortable again?
Now...ya'll go surf while I lay on this bag of ice!
