I have tried searching for a few hours on this forum and online for more information but none of it is updated within the past few years. In the middle of January I'm going to puerto plata,DR with my family for about 10 days and I'm going to bring my board with me. Ill be staying at the lifestyles holiday vacation resort on confresi beach. Has anyone ever stayed in puerto plata and have surfed their?

I'm wondering if i will be able to surf in puerto plata or i will have to take a taxi all the way to cabarete/encuentro which i think is about 40 min away and would cost 30-35 dollars each way where the main surfing spots are. When would i be able to surf in peurto plata, would the winds have to be better or is it on the swell. The north side of DR is a very consistent place but most of the day its onshore winds, is peurto plata ever surfable?

Any information you could give me would be or advice on what i should do,maybe if someone has rented a car there and its cheaper than taking a taxi every day there. i have never surfed in DR and surfing some warm waves in the winter would be great instead of getting ice-cream headaches in the winter here on the east coast.
    Thanks

Rent a car, take the extra insurance & head for Cabarete. The break is easy to find. Don't surf off to the right as it is razor sharp coral reef only a couple of feet under the water. Stay in front of the beach shack on what the locals call the point. It's not a wide break & it gets crowded. Gotta go at DP - - by mid-day it's consistently blown out sideshore & the kiters take over.

If you rent, be sure you check the condition of the equipment including the leash & string. Not unusual for rental gear to be in worn condition, and if something breaks, and the board gets washed in and dinged, you will pay a lot of pesos for repairs.

Urchins are the hazard at Cabarete. Might want to bring reef booties if you're only there two days. Sosua rarely breaks, wouldn't bother with it. Playa Grande is about an hour or so up the road from Cabarete; breaks great on the right swell but has a pretty good paddle to get to it.

Respect the locals, even when they snake your wave and / or drop in on you, hah.

Are there any breaks in puerto plata close to confresi beach that i can surf at if I'm not able to head all the way to cabarete? and what are the names of the breaks.

Also how much you think it would cost to rent a car in DR each day?

Thanks for the all the info
