I go down once a week to Stone Harbor every July/August and I'm from N Monmouth County and I'll tell u its nothing like up here. When there's a swell-IT'S ON! (like it will be Sun/Mon!!! ) When there isn't (like the past 2 years when I'm down)-The beach is still fun by meeting new people (usually hott girls) and just ****ing around with the tourists (my brother and I), partying, going into town, and playing mini-golf. However, there is surfing beaches every 3 streets which sucks and goes from 10am-5pm (Go for a DP or go late!) You also have Wildwood 15 min away which is sick with the different parks they have and everything. A little dirty though. Excellent restaurants down here too! Its pretty much a good time no matter what happens. Its a vacation inside a vacation in NJ. Have fun!
I live in Cape May, and don't get your hopes up so fast. The reports said that yesterday and today was suppose to be decent.. Somewhat glassy with waist high waves. When I got out there, was just little ankle waves and a few knee high.. Just sat in the ocean and floated and watched a few dolphins go by. That and tried to talk to a few girls, but they happened to only speak Russian. But hopefully the report stays the same, and there are nice waves.. If not, just walk along the shops or even chill on the sand and holler at some girls. Haha, that's what I do when I am bored down there.
I'll give you a heads up, Cape May is ridiculously tide dependent. We've driven up there for a few of the bigger swells this winter and it would go from firing overhead on the low and incoming tides to completely flat on the high tide. One of the weirdest things I've seen. I think that the surf here in the Delmarva area is a little more predictable. Just my 2 cents.
Unless it's changed a lot since all the pumping took place, The Cape May I grew up with was a very sloping sand bottom all the way to the end of the jetties. Not at all a sandbar break like OCM where I'm at now. It made for a mushier wave, but an easy wave to learn on. The only really hollow wave was Poverty Beach, and that was generally a suck up shorebreak. Let's see some photos from there, I've often been tempted to check it out in person, but wives generally don't like surf based trips from my experience.
I surf CM alot but mainly in the offseason. last i checked, the cove was weird with a huge sandbar. broadway and poverty were slamming with hollow pits and the rest were ok. it's really only worth it in a north/north east wind since other s jerz breaks are better with westies.
