Very true...surfing at night can be fun.......and also a chance you take. It's a known fact that the ocean feeds at night. Especially with bright lights that are shinning in the water. Light attracts bait....bait attracts sharks. Not saying you will get attacked.....but you have a greater chance of getting attacked at night then during the day.

Last weekend my parents said someone caught a 7 foot Mako in North OC, near state line. I also heard rumor of a HAMERHEAD being caught somewhere near OC... My brother and I were out for a session and had 3 skates circling close to us (like 10 ft close). I think the really cold water has all the fish (and shark) screwed up and disoriented.
Any thoughts on why the July water is so F-ing cold!?!? I know rain plays into that but honestly........
I've surfed the pier many times at night esp. really muggy august nights - fishermen will cast at you, but I've never really had a problem most of them will be on the same side due to the current.
I have seen fisherman pull up sharks while I was out there - one night a guy got one at least 6', he had to drop a net and work it into it because it was too big to pull up on a line, he then dragged it along the pier to the beach since it must have been too heavy to pull straight up.
I've also seen sharks many times in oc but never heard of an actual attack.

theres actuallly a restaraunt on the beach in long branch that shines a spotlight out into the ocean....they use it to give there customers an ocean view....but for surfers ....its great
you're just being a wussy. the best surf is at night next to a lit up pier. i always go to the pier when low tide falls around night time, the winds are light, and you can barely see the little groundswell rolling in. you know the awesome view? you cant really see the bottom of the wave, but you can see the reflection from the boardwalk lights in the wave. its like surfing on lights.You know what else likes bright lights by the pier? Hint: it has many rows of serrated teeth that replace when fractured... much like a yum yum tooth escalator

the only time ive ever seena shark near the line up was in November in OC when they got a picture of a shark about 50 yards off shore feeding on some fish. Estimated it to be around 8-10 ft, I have the picture but its from newspaper Ill try and find a link.
last week, north of tower road, i had a 6 foot brown or dusky (not sure which) roll on some bait about two feet from my board. Scared the **** out of me, but he was not aggresive towards me at all. Two years ago i was out at the north side of indian river and a huge brown fin came cruising right through the lineup, moving side to side so def. not a dolphin, and everyone rushed out and just watched him cruise around for 10-15 minutes. Delmarva has a large shark population but they usually are not aggresive sharks at all. Most of the large sharks folks pull off the beach are sand tigers, brown sharks, and dusky sharks. All of which look fearsome but are very unaggresive. I will say though that we have been catching some huge thresher sharks at b buoy the last couple of weeks, and that is very close to the beaches.

yea ive surfed next to the peir til like 1030 one night it was so sick but people were fishing near us so there could have been some sort of sea creatures in the water
