Trip to Playa Hermosa in late September, early October
Been trying to go on a trip with a good friend of mine for years now. Finally his old lady gave him the go ahead for this fall. I have been to playa hermosa before, but during the dry season. What i would like to know is what type of surf should i be expecting this time of the year. I know SE swell is hard to come by at this point in time so am i waisting this trip by going here when i should be going somewhere else. Also is car a must when staying in jaco/playa hermosa, we are looking at a studio apartment in town and a bungalow right next to the almond tree in playa hermosa. Trying to find the cheapest route.
I've been down there in September and there is still a good bit of the southern hemi swell that time of year. Expect chest to head high, but less is always possible. October is on the downswing. you could stay in Hermosa without a car, but depending on the sandbars, the nearby breaks are really tide dependent and can go from perfect, to perfectly closing out, and from big and barreling to gutless and crumbly with that tidal swing. Without a car your options are limited and there are fun waves within 20-30 minutes down the road like Roca Loco and Esterillos. You don't need 4x4 in that area to get around and split two ways, I would say its worth it to get a little beater. Why anyone would want to stay in Jaco itself is beyond me - mediocre waves, tourist trap vibe.
yea and thats how i felt when I went to jaco. Only thing is i could pay 70 dollars a night there or 130 a night in playa hermosa at the house. has anyone stayed at the backyard hotel in playa hermosa, or any other place in playa hermosa
I always stayed at the Cabinas Vista Hermosa for the 1st couple days. It's near Kryp row and the backyard. lots of mota pura.
It was the only place in hermosa in 91. Miguel, the owner, would have breakfast waiting after the morning session. special rates during rainy season.
