over the last couple years, i seem to catch a bad head cold the day after surfing sometimes. it usually lasts 2-3 days. i noticed a pattern that it seems to happen after a surf, if my nose doesn't leak water when i am done surfing. i am sure all of you know the infamous 'drainage' of salt water that comes pouring out after a surf. i am pretty sure, the head cold comes from water that does not drain from my nose. does anyone have any tricks to freeing your nose of water? i tried a pot, but it didn't really work too well.
surfing should not (ideally) make you sick.
everybody gets the nose drain thing; usually at the wrong time.
are you surfing near 'drain-out spots' of high fecal-coliform freshwater ponds such as spring lake/takanassee?
beware the danger of sinus infections which worse case scenario can make you dead.
thats pretty common. If you have allergies or other forms of congestion, then it becomes easier for water to get trapped in the sinuses. The other suggestions are good - use ear plugs to get water from getting in through the ears, and neti pot after sessions to help drainage. Simply leaning over for a minute is a good way to help drain.
If your "plumbing" is bad the water gets trapped in the upper sinus cavities. Once trapped, it kind of festers. it's not the water is dirty, it's the fact that the water just stays in there. I had over 14 wicked sinus infections in 1 year - then the vertigo kicked in. Absolutely brutal. Sinus surgery fixed the plumbing.
Neti pot uses natural pressure and flow to go from one end of the sinus chambers to the other, cleaning out anything trapped solid or liquid. Sometimes I use cold water after a rough night to cure a hangover - kind of like a winter dawn patrol.
