Casting hooks into water where folks are swimming or surfing is a bit lame. I never felt comfortable in that situation. I will say that here in Galveston, when folks fish off the jetties, they fish on the side opposite of the surfers, regardless of which side that happens to be that given day. If they're wade or beach fishing, it's only on flat days.
When I was a kid in Cape Canaveral, Fl, we'd only surf fish AT NIGHT. Only after the water was empty. It's just f-in strange to be comfortable fishing in a crowd a people.
