2 Dead and 1 Missing in NJ

Apparently there are two people that died and 1 still missing after this weekend with the rip currents in NJ. Some sounds like stupidity, swimming 100yds off shore after 7pm. Careful out there to all.

At least they wrap up the article nice: "Surfers, however, are enjoying the larger swells."

I feel very bad for these people, but I do fear another "cracking down" about rip current "safety" i.e. - total paranoia at the beach when there is waist high swell and onshore wind over 5 kt. There are beaches in New York that are so fearful of liability that they close/limit surfing when someone farts.

Don't people realize the ocean isn't a POOL and open water swimming/wading is inherently dangerous? I know that I am preaching to the choir, I'm just thinking out loud.

That's sad to hear....I heard the count was up to 7 dead now and 1 still missing. I doubt they planned to swim 100 yards out. They probably were swimming near the shore line and had gotten sucked out 100 yards out. That sounds more like it. I saw that happen all weekend. The rip was hella wicked. Life guards were saving people all weekend.....mostly Saturday.

I work at Manasquan beach. There is usually two lifeguard stands in between two jetties. They put one down and red flagged it, while they put all 4 guards on the other stand (north stand cause of currents)

As for the Inlet, they let people surf there, but a bunch hit the jetty. They were letting people bodyboard/bodysurf in the waves as long as they had fins on. They were busy this weekend.

that is terrible news. Got caught in a deep spot with my gf a few weeks ago and had to swim her out of it. Pretty gnarly..

That's easy to do in WW. I was surfing a few blocks from where it all went down and there is a very deep hole on the inside. The rips didn't seem all that bad on sat night but the swell was pretty good size.

well dont you think that if the guy has been missing for that long, he probably drown by now no one could really survive. it take up a lot of energy then you would jus die unless he was rescued.
