How's Sandy's Beach, Waikiki, and the North Shore in mid-late December. Thinking bout heading out there for X-Mas Break (Late Dec) and just wondering whats the average conditions/heights for each spot. Like I know the NS is usually macking so I prob will **** my pants and not ride at the NS unless its like 3-5'...Prob will stay at the Kahala Resort FYI. Any recommendations is good too. Mahalo brudah!
Stayed at turtle bay resort on the north shore this past January. The break next to the hotel is a deepwater reef so its a little safer than other breaks you probaly know of. Take a trip to wakiki on the south shore a day for some smaller waves. Also recomend Lani's, a longboard wave. Prepared to be humbled if you go out at any breaks on the north shore. Decided to go to haleiwa one afternoon with a solid 4-6 ft NW swell(hawaian scale). Alot different when you get out there.Prepared to be humbled! Its totaly different than the east coast, between the reefs, stronger swells, and getting used to the new breaks. Again, prepared to be humbled.But hey, at least when you come home you will be charging any swell that comes around with no problem.
If theres a good swell be sure to go to pipeline for a day and watch it. Bring a camera and lots of film. Check out my pics theres some of pipe and turtle bay. Have fun
Yea Turtle Bay was one of the hotels I wanted to stay at, but my parents heard from family friends that its kinda boring there...but your pics are VERY nice. I could def enjoy myself there. We'll prob stay somewhere on the South Shore...and just explore everywhere. I'm def prepared to be humbled by the waves there. NO DOUBT! I was just saying I MIGHT give it a shot-you know no guts no glory. Hah. Otherwise, I'll have fun at other breaks with my bro. Just looking for a good time. And yes I def will bring some film and a camera. Thats a definite. Thanks for your input, appreciate it
Just an FYI to everyone I bodyboard...not surf. My bro does both but will prob just Bodyboard or bodysurf at small places...
If your on the south shore be shore to check out a break east of wakiki. I believe its called walls? Good bodyboard wave. I was also with my brother, its good to be out there with someone you know. Sure you guys will have fun where ever you go.

The south shore is usually "flat" in the winter. Waikiki has a few breaks near the Illikai hotel called Kaiser, threes, fours, etc. They are usually 1 to 3 feet reef break in the winter. Fun, clear, warm water. Ala Moana is typically flat in the winter, but when its breaking its an awesome deep blue wave breaking WAY off shore. Diamond Head always has a wave, from 2' + wind can be a factor there. Lock your car and don't leave ANYTHING in it. The wall is just down the road from Diamond head. Its an exciting reef break out on a point at the base of million dollar homes. Sandy's beach and Makapuu are further out of town to the east. Long drive, beatiful road. Sandy and Makapuu are usually big in the summer and flat in the winter. Sandy's is a must for bodyboarding. In the summer the wave gets so heavy, the paramedics park there because someone is getting hurt. Its a 90% closeout, but what a view.
The North Shore has a much heavier wave and a vibe to match. Hawaii waves are bigger and more powerful than they look. Turtle Bay, Sunset, Halaeiwa, Pipe Littles, its all about wind, and swell size & direction. Don't go to Makaha unless you have a local escort. Locals only there. Awesome wave though.
