    Well. . .

when it scares you, it's best to stay on the beach. Just know your limits and live to surf another day.

if you can paddle out on a big day im saying Just go for it. Start off on the shoulder and drop into a few quick ones, then once you get your confidence up after a few waves, take it to the peak and charge it. If you can paddle out on a 7 foot day, go for it. You should be able to get a lot of practice in big waves in the upcoming month or so with the hurricane season. good luck

Just know your own limits. Paddle out in just about anything, if you got balls and willing to take the drops. Pushing your limits is how you get better, just make sure you can hold your own first.

And make sure you take out your um on the big waves. That 5'6 wont go very fast.

yea dude im 15 too but ive been surfing for about 4 yrs now... its obviously most fun in the winter because a lot less surfers and a lot more room to spread out. i dont only judge the size of the wave when i think about going out. you gotta look at the dimensions of the wind like strength, length, and for how long (i.e. fetch) if there were super strong sideshores then most likely there will be a strong sideshore current-usually thats no fun if its really strong because your constantly fighting the current

also look if the waves are closing out or if theyre peaking and hollow. i take all of these into consideration. biggest ive surfed was double overhead but it was a SE swell (im pretty sure cant remember it was last jan or feb?) with rights breaking perfectly off the jetty.

also if the waves are big but its an easy paddle out then go for it. just dont ever fight the currents or the ocean. go with the flow and youll be fine
