Petition against surfboard airline fees

This is ridiculous....

I booked a flight to Ecuador this winter with Delta not knowing about these new charges. I called Delta and they're telling me I can't have a bag over 70lbs. The bag alone will cost $300 and charges will be added per board and increased weight!!! Unreal! This is affecting every flight to major surf destinations!

I'm not sure what good a petition is going to do. I think we as surfers need to use the power of the wallet and avoid using the carriers imposing these crazy fees. I know most of the US airlines are doing this now, however many of the foreign carriers are not. Taca flys to central america, I'm not sure if they go to South America, and only charge $50 per board as an example. I feel for you though, my last trip cost me $900 just for my boards.

Same here buddy....I went to Barbados 2 years ago...boards were free. Booked a trip back there this Feb. coming up. Now they are charging $125 each way per board.

Seriously think about what you are complaining about. Shipping your boards for a surfing vacation? You petition will not do SH!T. Turn on the news kids. The Dow is at its lowest and with its biggest fall in 30 years. GAS IS ONLY GOING UP...yes that means jet fuel is increasing at a greater rate. Do any of you understand that pros buy boards when they get to their destination and/or have local shapers prepare them some. If the pros aren't packing a board bag, why would you. Better preperation and timing and you could benefit from the wonderfull world of SHIPPING! Yup, ship your boards and sell them or leave them. There is no reason to take as many boards on board then alot of us used to take. Most places (85%) you can go buy one when you get there. It may be a hundread or two more...but it will be specific to what works at the local break, no dings, no bag, NO LOST BAG, and its ready to surf. Think about it? Bring some leashs, traction, and some fcs's and futures with you. Then you are set. Sell it when you are done...or...Rap it up with some trash and card board and use some duck tape that you packed in your bag as ding repair and send it home dhl or ups. Works everytime.

Yeah dude, I feel your pain, I flew to San Diego for work and Delta was one of our "preferred" carriers. I realized after the fact that it was $300 to fly my board. I didn't do it (which was good cause i only saw the beach once for 10 minutes). Just fly a different airline. United charges $80 each way. Taca is cheap too. Go with them instead.

LOLLL...so since the Pros aren't packing bags or boards, that means we shouldn't either?!?! You know, because we are all Pro and have the perks/benefits of just doing all that.

But in all seriousness, it is understandable with the airlines..but charging per board when they weigh a few pounds... complete bull****!

If you're flying out of Newark to PR it is anyone's guess. Sometimes they charge me $80 for the coffin each way, other times they open it up and count the boards. If they open it up and start counting, just drop your pants and bend over cause its going to hurt real bad. Usually, Contential only charges $80 per bag out of PR; however, in Newark those folks don't give a sh*t about surfers and love to hassle us. My advise is to go as lean as possible. If your going longer term, buy a board(s) there and sell it when you leave.
