What's the furthest from home any of you have gone for a surf?
The furthest I have gone is the Outer Banks where I only had one session while i was there due to lack of swell. I've surfed CB maybe twenty times, Masonboro a hundered times, and WB probably in the thousands.
So that's pretty pathetic. Someone show me up!
I've got my entire life to travel and will when I am able.
lol. I'm the same way. I surf my few spots all the time. I've traveled to the Carribean twice but wasn't able to surf either time. I've never even ventured to OB.
the farthest that i've ben as to costa rca for 2 weeks and it wa pretty good except for the traveling since i was alays worried about my boards.
I would definitely recommend heading to Puerto Rico. Its a cheap flight and you don't need a passport. The waves from Rincon up to Aguadilla are great. A lot of people speak english and the liquor is cheaper than the beer.
Stay away from Jobos... The waves aren't worth the locals.
Everyone else was really cool at every other spot though.
I think Puerto Rico and Costa Rica are great first time surf trips for any east coaster. They are safe, easy, and relatively inexpensive. The only downfall is that rental cars are highly recommended if you want to get the most out of the trips. This is both good and bad as it adds to cost, but gives you the exploration aspect to the trip.
Nicaragua is fun. Other than the superfast paddling local kids who snake waves it was amazing.
I've been as far as Indo: Bali, Lombok, and Sumbawa. I spent a month there the same year as the bali bombing. The sari club was right by our hostel. If you can't stay more than two weeks it's not even worth the flight time. Takes like 3 days to get over the jet lag.
Best bang for the buck is Nicaragua or PR. I like to travel with my wife, so PR is great. Rincon is super friendly for the non surfing wife (spouse). Maria's, Domes, Sandy beach all have a bar in front of the surf breaks. That and the breaks are within 20 minute drive of the airport (BQN-Aquadilla).
Costa Rica is over rated for the travel, but the waves are WAY more consistent. Not really friendly to the nonsurfing lady-types. Same with Nicaragua. I have heard Panama is really nice and the people are very welcoming.

Werd, one of my friends and very close to one of my good buds was in the Sari Club at the time and did not make it. He was a ripper out of Central Florida. The two traveled to Indo a bit, lived on the GoldCoast in Aussie for a couple years sending Email after email out from G-land pits to N straddie paddles over great whites only to have no one there and perfect A frames. That area of the surfing world is so mental.
Haven't been quite that far, but I def. see a schooner traveling in indo very soon in the crystal ball. Next stop Peru or Ecuador.

A small island in the Indian Ocean. It's called Diego Garcia, not the best place I've been to, but definately the furtrest from home.
