I've been as far as Indo: Bali, Lombok, and Sumbawa. I spent a month there the same year as the bali bombing. The sari club was right by our hostel. If you can't stay more than two weeks it's not even worth the flight time. Takes like 3 days to get over the jet lag.
Best bang for the buck is Nicaragua or PR. I like to travel with my wife, so PR is great. Rincon is super friendly for the non surfing wife (spouse). Maria's, Domes, Sandy beach all have a bar in front of the surf breaks. That and the breaks are within 20 minute drive of the airport (BQN-Aquadilla).
Costa Rica is over rated for the travel, but the waves are WAY more consistent. Not really friendly to the nonsurfing lady-types. Same with Nicaragua. I have heard Panama is really nice and the people are very welcoming.
