Some talk about soul surfing and what not, but i find that there is a lot more selfishness in surfing than the typical team sports. I am also an avid basketball player among other things, and i see much less disrespect among others when playing ball. There are some straight forward reason for this, for one being that when we are surfing we only have to get along with ourselves and the ocean. And, there is a sort of competition out there against one another to ride the best waves.
I do think its interesting how surfing breeds this sort of egotistical pride, like "i got the best wave of the day" or "i am not telling anyone about this spot". Its undeniably part of our sport, and i'm as guilty as the next person in wanting someone to take my photo or whatever. It seems as though when you are out there riding with people you know and respect then this nature diminishes and whether you are riding a surfboard, bodyboard, or a mcdonalds tray it doesn't really matter.
