cape hatteras is the national park, and rodanthe is a town located within cape hatteras.

If you are going down with a group of people, you could rent out a house or two right on the beach - thats the way to go. There are giant houses on scattered along the beaches there, and should be cheap rentals in the offseason.

Anywhere from Rodanthe to the Lighthouse is a good place to be. If the winds are more southerly, the surf is cleaner to the north. If the winds are more northerly, the surf is cleaner to the south.

    I'm just curious

If this is to be a school sponsored trip, how exactly are you planning on justifying it for educational purposes? If it's just a club trip, then that's a different story.

    Rentals

Rentals in Hatteras typically go by the week rather than by the night, and most reputable Realty offices will only rent to family units. There may be some exceptions in these hard economic times, but I did find a long weekend rental near the Lighthouse for Memorial weekend last year.

i have no personal experience in renting, but no of plenty of people who do this. Just give a realty company a call. In the offseason, you should be able to get something for super cheap.

You definitely do not have to be a family to rent a house down there... I know tons of groups of people that have done this. My friend and a group rented a place in September for like 800 a week I believe. These places can sleep like 10+.

Just call around, and see what you can find.

I think what MDSurfer was referring to is that the contracts explicitly state that no frat party type arrangements or unaffiliated groups without adult supervision which means that if things get a little wild they can evict you on the spot and you lose all your money.

There are other options: several of the motels as you drive into Buxton have nice set-ups, some with 2 bedrooms plus a sofa/pullout in the general living area, and a mini kitchen. For starters, check out Lighthouse View Motel, Outer Banks Motel, Falcon Motel, and Cape Hatteras Motel.
