    OBX vs everywhere else.

So, I am originally from MD. OCMD was my home break for many summers.

I live in San Diego now. I moved here for the surf. I surf everyday, all year here.

My girl is also from MD, and we are considering moving back east to a beach town somewhere.

We want to be near a large city, so we can get work obviously.

We both work in the restaurant biz. I am a manager, she is a chef. So, pretty much every beach town has a little work for us.

Problem with OCMD is that not only does it get super f'in cold in the winter, it is a very seasonal beach town.

VB statistically gets better swell than OCMD and is a tad bit warmer both on land and in the water..

VB also is part of the whole Norfolk area, so it is a huge city with tons of jobs...

Wilmington is super chill too, but that is like 7 hours from MD.

So, anyway, all arrows are pointing us towards the VB area...

Now, I understand mid atlantic swell. where they come from, how the shorelines typically react...

So, I also understand that OBX is the best spot back east.

It is really close to the deep ocean bed which helps the swell hold up, where as every other place in the midatlantic has the gradual shore decrease, that kills the swell..

I understand a lot of guys in VB travel to OBX all the time...

But is OBX really THAT MUCH better? TO live? To surf?

I mean, guys from OBX make it sound like there is no surf anywhere back easy but there...

So, since I love surfing so much, is OBX the only place for me back there? I mean, if all the action is in OBX, i would be ****ting my pants in a flat beach town....

But then again, OBX is a bunch of small towns, its seasonal and there isnt much work..

So, again, is OBX leaps and bounds ahead of VB and the rest of the mid-atlantic?

The Outer Banks is generally the most consistent area in the Mid Atlantic as far as rideable days. But, you are talking about a relocation, and are you only concerned with surf?

I think the Outer Banks is great. Its laid back, surf towns... but there are a lot of differences between the different areas in the Mid Atlantic.

If you are looking to be closer to the city life, then you may like to be in Central Jersey, where you are close to NYC. Delmarva and VB really aren't that different, but you may have a little more year round livelihood in VB.

What are you looking for besides surf? After all, there are plenty of flat days, no matter where you are on the east coast.

why not just move somewhere else on the west coast?

Why not just stay in SD? I mean, a lot of right-coasters would love to move across the continent, I know I would, to try something new. But I guess it's not giving you what you're looking for....

OBX is definitely going to pick up better/bigger swell than most places on the EC. Have you ever been there? I mean, when you get there, you are really far away from the mainland, and you realize that at night when you can actually SEE the Milky Way in the sky, wheras, a lot of places have too much light pollution.

But in regards to the other factors, like you said: Seasonal, tourists, not much work.
BUT, Some warmer water for sure.

Check out Wilmington, cause that place is pretty big, the beaches are nice, and you will get some decent sure down there. I'm sure some guys on here from there can tell you more. But obviously , the further north you go=colder water.
Don't worry about being away from MD, you're not missing much!!! Well, maybe family
That being said.....I'm ready to head SOUTH!!

the water can be warmer in VB/OBX, but its usually only an issue during the dead of winter and not that big of a difference.

If you want warm water, then you need to go south of hatteras.

I say think about staying in MD, since that seems to be the main draw back east. It is fun in the summer, and you can get empty lineups in the winter. If you can take the freezing winters, then take a trip or two to the Caribbean or Central America in the winter - that is what a lot of us do.

Wilmington is a HUGE restaurant place. Wrightsville is a pretty nice beach too. During the summer, you can only between checkered flags (spread out down the beach) but before 10 and after sometime around five ( I don't remember) there isn't flags to worry about. Topsail and Carolina beach are also down the road if Wrightsville is closing out or something. Wilmington is a nice place.

    Thanks,

Yeah, Wilmington was actually where I was looking before VB. My old room mate out here in SD told me he lived in wrightsville before he came out here and how cool it was.

And to answer the guy that asked why I dont stay out here. Cause it's like I said. Family mostly. I have spent every day for 7 years surfing. I changed my profession and made it the main focus. My girl has been by my side the whole time. She doesnt surf. at all. So, I just feel like I have done the selfish thing long enough. And although the waves and weather here are perfect, we both have our whole families back east.

So, basically her and I discussed it. And, as cliche as it sounds, you all must feel me, but I am a surfer. Living somewhere away from the ocean is not really an option for me. I want to be able to surf when there is surf, regardless of how often that may be...

So, surfing is just something i want to be a part of my day to day life.

Since VB is such a large city area, i thought it looked pretty apealing. Same with the wilmington area, but wilmington is 7 hours from MD as to VB 3.5.

So, my point is this: There is a lot more to life than surfing, but I want to continue surfing as long as possible.

So, Wilmington and VB get about the same amount of surf? Yes? Wrightsville etc. faces more south east and VB picks up more of the nor easters or more direct East swells.

So, also I have never been to either place, I am assuming the wave conditions get the best in wrightsville in the fall and spring.

Where VB picks up it's best surf in the winter when it is freezing cold from the Nor east swells.

Anyway, I think that is what all the data I have looked at points to.

I like that Wilmington's weather is more like Cali, but its still 7 hours from home, so that is getting close to defeating the purpose of being back east, if we are still super far away.

Not sure what your priorities are... wealth, surf, warm water or family? Understand how you can be conflicted but direction will come from your (you and sweetie pie) in the heart priorities. Maybe you will want to move to Hawaii, or Atlantic City, or Jacksonville? Sounds like a good time to do some brainstorming of all the things you want, priority list them and assign values as to how important they are... and also list the not-in-play items.
