I'm thinking of heading to Puerto Rico to take a spanish course from may 15- june 15. I was curious about the surfing in the area. Is it worth bringing my board? Where are the good surf spots in San Juan? Does anybody know how the night life is? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Did you know that the island was originally named San Juan (Saint John) and that the capital city was originally names Puerto Rico (rich port)? So, was your question about the Island or about the capital city. If the capital city, were you interested in Old San Juan or Hato Rey or Carolina? Or, somewhere else? By nightlife do you mean gambling and casinos, the gay bars & transvestite shows in San Juan, or the latina chicas?
I would be staying at Universidad de Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras, by looking at google maps it is close to Hato Rey. But I know it is like a 20 minute cab ride to the closest coast. I'm 20 years old and just looking for info on fun night life (bars, clubs (not gay)) and any potential surf spots. THanks alot
Will you have a rental car or access to a car? Relying upon public transportation?
Your main break that time of year will probably be La Ocho (Stop 8, named after the old main line bus run from Rio Piedras to Old San Juan (really the other way around). You can probably take the bus unless some fancy rules suddently prevent surfboards form being on-board. You might also be able to take a "publico" (public car) - not sure if they make the Rio Piedras to San Juan run anymore. There are also some breaks in the Condado area (directly east of the island of Old San Juan) and in Isla Verde (near the airport) for summer time riding.
However, you probably will want to get some wave action to the east, between Luquillo and Fajardo and in the SE area (e.g., Patillas, or Inches), to catch the trade wind swells.
May-June is not peak season... just think of your local East Coast patterns. Nonetheless, you can get some fun waves in Luquillo (think "La Pared" or even "La Selva") and further east in Fajardo (e.g., "***** Point") and elsewhere.
UPR is University... there are bound to be some fun local bars. In Old San Juan you can completely lose yourself, but be careful because there are a fair number of muggings there. Best to get in tight with your bodyboarding chica teacher.
are you dim??? Its San Juan dude, the capital city of Puerto Rico... Of course there is night life!!! And of course there are waves!!!
Thanks alot for this information, it helps alot. I will not have a car, so I guess I will be spending a good amount of money on taxis.
you are going there at prob the worst time of year for surf, but having said that, yes bring a board. The north coast generally always has a small to medium sized trade swell, and yes there are very good waves around San Juan.
