If you are looking for some area like Assateague try getting a 4x4 pass to Island Beach State Park just south of Seaside. I believe its about 8 miles of undeveloped beach that you drive on with the 4x4 pass and find your own break. There is also some limited parking area if you don't have a 4x4.

What would the tolls be from Newark to say Ocean City, or wherever?

i live right around newark. you get on at route 78 for free at mile marker 143 or so. if i were to guess i'd say, $1 at perth amboy, 50 cents at Toms River, $1 at Barnegat and i think 35 cents to get off at mile 32 or so. so almost 3 dollars one way.

just out of memory i dont think there is another, i could be wrong but thats a ballpark for you

Depends how you plan on getting there. Easiest is the parkway, which is gonna have tolls. You can follow some smaller highways that'll be toll free.

aka if you want to take route 9, you might as well add 2 hours to the trip

The tolls will literally eat you alive, let alone the beach tag fees. Pay as you go.
