I've heard some talk lately that those huge cruise liners dump all of their waste and sewage into the sea as well as the water from the ballast tanks, all of which would destroy the ocean. I'm not sure if all of this is true so I wanted some voices as a confirmation that this crap is truly going on. Perhaps Surfrider could do something about it seeing that it is such a large organization.
I actually have a couple of shares in Royal Carribbean, and ever since I heard this stuff I've wanted to sell it, but I would only break even due to the recession, so I don't want to do anything stupid.
From what I can gather, you are allowed to dump things such as dredge materials and passenger sewage at a different number of miles out to sea depending on where you are on the coast if you have a license to do so.
If you just google "Cruise Ship Dumping", the first site is an article reporting that Florida doesn't even have any state laws against this, and cruise ships do it all the time! There are so many articles (few may be bogus but many are bona fide), it will blow your mind! Poisoning the oceans -, and no way to enforce any laws that may exist!
i forget...more than 9 miles? 12 miles? out is international waters. No single state or country has jurisdiction. Beyond that, I think it takes an international treaty to make a law against ocean dumping, and only countries that sign would be bound by it, and no real penalties for infractions.
