By the second week of May, water temps should be well into the 50's. Keep an eye on those south swells like the one forecast for the weekend- south winds bring an upwelling of cooler ocean water near the shore so expect some icy water temps (upper40's) for this weekend.

i find that the most drastic water temp. changes occur during may, june and July. it will climb then fall, then climb climb climb then upwell and drop to the 50's in mid july. from here on out, you need to have a 3/2, short sleeve full, long sleeve spring, spring and thermal top on hand for every scrap of waves. i paddled for 2 and half hours on saturday in board shorts in the ocean with no problems, granted my rails were 7 inches thick!

this afternoon at OC inlet there were about 10 ppl out, all 3/2s from the look, mostly without gloves and most in booties but not all. i surfed the crappy waves for about an hour w/o gloves or booties and it ws ok. I'd guess the water was upper 50s.

So can we make it official that gloves are optional in ocean city!? I just got a new CI POD quad fin and i wanted to hit it this weekend with no gloves on. I also expect a thread dedicated to raving about this board. Just prepare yourself i've been waiting forever to get one of these.

I was jetboating in the OCM back bays on Sunday and the water temps ranged from 62 inside the inlet, to 68 degrees right behind the convention center. My meek crew kept me from exiting the inlet to check ocean temps, but suffice to say I had to swim (sans wetsuit) to clear my jet pump behind the convention center, and while chilly at first, I got used to it pretty quickly. The good news is with more warm days like Sunday, and continuing cycles of the bay tides, it should start to have an impact soon enough at the mouth of the inlet. Just hit it on an outgoing tide.

ya, surfing the inlet there, you often get these pockets of warm water that are much warmer that areas to the north... I love when that happens.
