I was planning on going out saturday or sunday but I heard bad things about east coast riptides. I'm not that experienced in the water - are there places around the MB coast that are safer, or should I just stay in and play it safe??

if your not comfortable in the surf, you shouldn't paddle out. if it looks like too much current and too big of surf for your comfort, then wait until sunday wait until the surf drops down. The good thing about surf that is too big, is that it will always get smaller. Can't always say the reverse about small days.
Trust me, If your not sure about it, stay on the beach and enjoy the show. Overhead is not the time to learn how to use / handle the rips. There will be no one there to rescue you if ya get pulled out. If your on a board, your on your own here...
The rest of the week is looking fun.
I am a newbie, and me and my friend will be going out. I just bought my first board and I want to try it out. Being that I'm new to the sport, I am not going to be stupid. I will surf Fri and Sunday, but Sat I'll just go to the beach and watch the actual surfers do their thing. Like someone said on a reply to me, I should not go out and put others at risk. I would hate to get hurt and have someone risk their life to save my butt because of my own stupidity. Best of luck to everyone this weekend!
cool - yeah sunday looks a lot calmer, but I'll be busy the rest of the week.
I'm still afraid of riptides. What do they look like, so I can avoid them? Any good websites with some info?? thanks

there are only two tides. high and low. there is no such thing has a rip tide. It's a rip current
Yeah they are called rip currents... I would not know how to explain it correctly, but the weather channel has a video up which helped me learn how to find them.

defiently if your new to surfing i would not go at all this weekend if its big. surf on the little days and work your way up.
