Need an opinion, or several. I'm going down to hatteras at the end of October. I don't want to camp in the campsites for obvious reasons. I'm just going to set up camp along the desolate beach south of the lighthouse. I understand it is not allowed. I have known people who have done it however recently there has been an uproar because of the turtles and bird eggs. I'm very respectful of animals and wouldn't destroy anything. You're aloud to drive on the beach and I certainly wouldn't do anything worse than some fisherman's car would do. Anyway, my questions is...since the new rules, how often and how spread out do the ranger's check the beaches at night. What do you think the odds are of getting caught?? 50 percent , 100 percent, not likely?? thanks guys.
I don't advise breaking the law but if you must...... you cannot sleep IN a tent on the beach period nor can you sleep in a vehicle. Bring fishing poles and set them up in front of your truck so you appear to be fishing and sleep in the bed of your truck or bring a cot. They WILL bust you if you and give you a ticket if they see you. Good luck.
i don't know how the authorities have been lately but from my past experiences they tend not to patrol the beaches much in the offseason. late october may be pushing it; certainly if you were there in late november, december, january, or february you wouldn't have a problem.
you're best off in the campground for sure - they have outlets and showers, plus you don't have to worry about being startled in the middle of the night by a ranger with a mag lite. good luck hope it works out for you
