Sorry you guys took it differently than i intended. I forgot I wasnt cracking jokes to my freinds but rather to a much wider community and anyone who gets on swellinfo. Even if i did mean it seriously, you will find that i have a very bad history with surfers that act cocky, irresponsible, selfish, and just plain mean. This is because when i was 8 a kid probably about 15 years old thought the world revolved around him, he was no better at surfing than I was at the time and he acted way to cocky. It was a usual 3 foot fun day when a rather big set came through about 5 foot, me being the shortest one out and happening to have priority was the happiest person at the beach, I had just dropped in and looked up and there was that ******* kook dropping through the air and some how his board smushed my ankle on my board, hurting like hell and we were jumbled around under water, our leashes got tangled up, and my favorite board was totaled, when i finally popped up I saw the peice of trash my best board had become and started crying the blues. I will never regret the asshole that could just walk right off the beach after making a little grom cry like that.

Well, first off man, you do not know me, as i do not know you. You may be an all right person off of here for all I know. There are no sides being taken, I just made a comment about something that should not have been joked about in the first place. Does not matter if he was serious or not man. My comment was not out of line. I don't need to be part of his family or a dear friend to have compassion or empathy for his family and friends losing him. So, I am not, nor was I playing the "holier than thou card of any kind." However, what was out of line was the, "I surf better than you" comment. First, you do not know me. Second, I don't care how well you surf. Hope all is well once again, and please do not respond to this. Oh, and yes, laughter is medicine for the soul-but not at other's expense....Especially at another's death man.

I hear you. We all experience kooks. That story had nothing to do with the kid who was killed though man. Yeah, he shouldn't have been out there during a storm like that, but a life was still lost. I just wanted to say I was not attacking you as a person, just that comment.
Hopefully we will all have some surf soon to enjoy........

So, were any of the surrounding surfers affected by the bolt? I am just curious about the amount of power distributed through the water when this happened. In a strange situation like this, I think we could all learn something from it. Other than the obvious point of not being in the water during a thunderstorm. If anyone has heard a scientific break down of the incident or from someone who was very close, I would love to know.
The I surf better than you comment was taken way outta context, but I guess that's nothing new. Where did I condone laughing at fellow humans death? I didn't. The only thing I said that MIGHT have been a stretch was the holier than thou comment.

ps: A lighting bolt can strike up to a mile away from the storm sometimes, so just because you do not see the storm doesn't mean that you cant be struck.

a bolt of lightning will produce an energy gradient "field" around where it strikes, in air and water. in air it is something like a ten times decrease every ten meters... not sure about water either. i bet within fifty meters is when you have to worry, i saw an article in the lumina news about it. thats how far his freinds were while he swam
