surfing is my way off escaping. it's perfect, hit the water catch a good wave rip it apart and then get another. but when there isnt any surf i lose it, smoking and drinking alot....how do you guys deal with **** without waves ?
i usually work. i work for myself and plan a lot of my jobs around the surf when i look at the forecast. hang out with my fiance. i was riding the dirtbike a lot, but i can't get into it much in the winter as well as having to travel quite a ways to a pit i can ride at. the only good thing about a flat spell is i can work whenever, and don't have to worry about planning my days through the swell forecast. i will work 12 or 14 hours one day if i gotta, and then have a whole day to surf the next day. like tomorrow i got 12 to 14 hours of work to do. might finish the last 3 wednesday morning though, and hit the surf the rest of the day.
Watch surf/bodyboard movies, read same type mags, online mags, pics, studying maps online. Basically keep bodyboarding in my mind at all times and keep reminding myself that waves are on the way. Basically try to stay stoked and pumped up for waves. Like tomorrow! And I'll be off work the next 2 days WHoo!
Wintertime is definitely a mind**** for staying focused. Drinking/smoking (Im assuming you mean da green) can be a quick escape, but NEVER ever let it cut into your surfing. never go out the day before you know there is gonna be waves. Always wait until after a swell, then celebrate!
i grade papers, write lesson plans, spend time w/ the girlfriend & parrot, catch up w/ work around the house...stuff that tends to fall by the wayside when we're getting a run of swell.
i'm lucky enough to have a gf that is VERY understanding when it comes to surfing. if it has been flat for a while, she doesn't mind if i blow something off to go surf. hell, after 2 years, she pretty much expects it.
flat spells are also a good time to catch up on board & wetsuit maintenance...ding repair, strip & re-wax boards, check the suits for tears...normal wear & tear stuff.
in the summer, i'll sit on the beach & read or do something else-swim, paddle, kayak...anything in the ocean, really.
