Thread: The Good Life

  1. #11
Nice video. I lived in a small village in Costa Rica last winter. It was so amazing to wake up, ride the bike down to the beach to check the break. get a cup of joe and head out. I waited tables, repaired bikes and otherwise hung out and surfed all winter. This year, I had to come back get a real job and surf weekends. I wouldn't trade that winter for anything though!

I know this one guy who went to Hawaii with his friends. He was having such a good time he told them he wasn't getting back on the plane. When it was time to leave they left and he stayed. He lived there for 6 months .I think he had to go back to the states because of his dad getting sick.Pretty gutsy thou.

Like the bluegrass song goes " I ain't broke, but baby I'm badly bent" and had a plane ticket already to come back. Definitely contemplating how to make it happen for long term. My wife is totally down with the idea so you never know.

sounds like u married the right woman... when i was in puerto rico i ran into this guy from md who would go there every winter and just play guitar at that calypso bar at night n surf all day... real cool guy but man i was so jealous. but hey we all make our decisions... n to coment toward a previous post, im not askin for answers. i just liked the video and wanted to share it since i think it can really pertain to surfers, especially since we are all from the northeast and are not that guy on the boat, where most of us may ideally want to be, to have the freedom to surf whenever u wanted. n i mean its def possible i may be to addicted to certain material things (were all on the computer to see this forum) but i think in my situation im real close to my fam n freinds and wouldnt want to be too far away from them, and that has its price... not bein able to feel my face when i get outta the water in the winter and having to have a decent job to have a decent place to live (especially in jersey). or mayb i just dont have the balls lol. n ya it def sux usin words like one day, cant, and couldnt, but ive made my decisions n am happy n im sure uve made urs, but its always cool to wonder n mayb rethink what is actually really important to u... n mayb u really could b that guy on that boat!

There's a duo I know they call themselves Colossal Fossil Sauce and they do just that yearly. What a life, huh?

I know what you mean. Just look at it like this though, you may not have to travel and live in a 3rd world country to live the "good life". I mean, I won't ramble on and on about where I live now, but I too grew up surfing and living in MD and at a certain point, I just had to get away and look at life from a different perspcetive. Al;though I thought about it about 10000 times, I never did stay down in Mex when i visited, although there were plenty of times I wanted too.... But, just go out and travel around the states too... You would be surprised at what kind of a life you can live off a bus boys wages an a different coast.

Anyway, follow that dream. It may last forever, it may last a month. I moved 3000 miles away and brought a few friends with me. Most made it 6-8 months and went back home. Some stayed up to 3 years, but 8 years later, I am the only one left. Staying far away for this long was what worked for me... But all my buddies since then have moved back home and diong the family thing. working 9-5... The only thing that pisses me off, is that when I visit now, these guys don't even surf anymore. I used to drag them out of bed every day no matter the size or conditions, now they put on 50 pounds and I can barely even get them on a golf course much less in the water...

But anyway, food for thought. You paradise may be somewhere you aren't looking.

Which is why since I have moved away years ago, the Fiance and I have not gone to Costa Rica, or Hawaii for that matter, because I always tell her, look at how hooked I am on where we live now... If I were to visit Hawaii or Costa in the past few years, I literrally may have never come back... It was a scary thought at one point. Where I was like, sh**, my fiance and I both work in restaurants and stuff, we could live anywhere... We all think like that... The What ifs... The "perma-vacationers" as they say in the heartbreak kid.
