    down time

This is a post that has probably already been made at some point, but I am just curious as to what others guys that live by the beach do throughout the year when there is no surf...

Its easy to hang out at the beach and just chill and swim in the ocean in the summer when the weather is nice and the water is warm... But its harder to stay involved in the ocean in the winter etc when the weather/water temps dont make it very appealing. What do you guys do that is ocean/water/beach related when there is no surf?

Skim boarding? Waking? Fishing? Boating? Swimming?

I usually just surf. If its winter and there is no surf, I will maybe call a friend with a boat and try and catch some bass. And in the summer, I will just hang out at the beach and swim around or bodysurf if there are no waves.... But other than that, I dont do much beach/water related stuff...

Where I live, I see people everyday, all year out Scuba Diving, Kyaking, Snorkling etc... I just never really do all that. I just surf, or swim if its really nice out...

Just curious... I know a lot of surfers dont even like the beach... 95% of the time, the only time I am on the beach is running in or out of the ocean and back home... But I know other surfers who just try and stay around the water alot, even when they arent surfing.

i try to be in the ocean or on the beach as frequently as possible. i look at my local beach every day, even if there's no surf. i run or walk on the beach, borrow my sister's kayak, paddleboard (not SUP), swim, skin dive, bodysurf, etc...i've made it a point to try to live as closely as possible to the "waterman ethic". i've also been getting (back) into photography of late, so i'll go take pictures somewhere, whether that's on the beach or someplace else.

in the winter here in nj, it's deff. tougher to stay connected to the beach when it's flat. that's when i do a lot of running on the beach. i'm not hard core enough to go for an ocean swim when the water's sub-40. i swim in the pool a lot, too. these long east coast flat spells, you've got to do something to keep your paddling muscles in some kind of shape if you want to be able to handle a strong side-shore current in a 5mil wetsuit & stay out for more than an hour. i also like to spend time w/ my parrot, gf, & the rest of my family or get caught up on projects around the house.

When there is no surf is use to take my mustang to Atco or to a cpl spot I will not say and race. When I had my big truck i would wheel it at the local mudhole that is now closed that to the a- holes at MTV and the ****ty Surf school that plastered it all on the tv.

Now I just take care of stuff around the house , Spend time with my familly and maybe do some surf fishing and hopefully some camping too this summer

Do you guys haev any sand around the shore that you allowed to go off-roading on? There are tons of trails like 20-30 minutes from my house, but there is a little public island in the middle of the bay that has free boat access on the beaches, so you can 4x4 on it. You aren't supposed to be a di** and go nuts on it, but its like a 2.5 mile strech of beach on the island that you can just go and have tons of fun on. I Kinda like Sand better than mud. its easier and fun... And after it rains, the sand gets even more fun... I dont have my wrangler anymore so I cant really go nuts on the trails, but I have an izuzu trooper 4x4 with the Torque On Demand and the auto-4 wheel drive system. Sometimes I will drop it into the manual system, but I take the trooper into some pretty deep sand and have never had any trouble just using the TOD system. Pretty cool. Good enough for me. I bought the last year Isuzu Trooper ever sold on the US market. Only make em in Aussie now.

Do you Ocean Kayak? Or do you Kayak on the bayside of the coasts? Just curious.

both, depending on what i'm in the mood for. i kind of like bay kayaking better, b/c there's more to look at...osprey nests egrets foraging for food, the occasional fox, etc...if the wind's really calm, i'll take my camera w/ me. i've gotten a bunch of really cool shots that way.
ocean kayaking kind of bores me, unless i go out far enough to be nearly out of sight of land. then it's fun.
