Ohhh god... Don't get me started on this topic. Look up "Pacific Trash Vortex." Its a huge vortex of plastic trash the size of texas floating in the pacific ocean. The plastic parts break down into small tiny pieces and are then eaten by fish, and that is whats causing high mercury levels in fish in the pacific. I read a study that said if the mercury rate in seafood continues to rise at the pace it is now, that in 20-30 years, the mercury levels will be too high to even consider eating. Seafood will basically become poison.

ever notice when you buy something at your local shop, more than likely they hand you a plastic bag to hold your newly bought merchandise? I always think this is ironic and typically ask them to keep the bag.

Yeah I have heard about it. It's pretty sickening. I have a strong feeling that this is gonna be one of those things that people don't even start to worry about until it's too late. It's gonna take a disaster -- just like the oil spill -- before people finally open their eyes and realize what is going on. It's sad that this is how things work.

And yeah it is ironic when you're handed a plastic bag from local shops. Maybe the next time that happens to me I'll have to give the store owner or whoever is working a piece of my mind so they really know what it is they're doing. I'm happy to say the shop I work at uses biodegradable bags! They decompose within 6 months. I found myself asking, "now why don't all stores use these?" I just don't get it?

Fact: 2 million plastic bottles are thrown away every 5 minutes in the united states.

Fact: 500 Billion to 1 Trillion plastic bags are thrown away annually in the united states.

and what happens to this plastic? It either gets incinerated, which causes the release of toxic chemicals that cause pollution, it gets carried over to who knows where to be left in a heap of plastic where environmental policies aren't all that strict, or it returns back into our ocean, sewage, and river streams.
