Rays and small sand sharks all around me today in Md. Also the worst jelly fish invasion in a long time. I got stung on the ankle the cheek, chin and neck at the same time. Finished off the session with a wallop on the left shoulder running down my back right through the shirt .

Oh god... I know all to well about jelly fish infestation. I used to teach surf camp, and always around this time of year the jelly fish come in swarms. But anyways, I would have to push kids into waves during all of this, treading water, just getting absolutly worked by jellyfish. One day I got stung so many times, that after camp was over, I just puked like crazy on the drive home, and felt like **** all day. Basically, I got stung soooo many times, that I was poisoned!!! It sucked!!!!

But the up side to this story, after that day, I guess I built up an immunity to jellyfish stings. For the rest of the summer, jelly fish stings literally had no effect on me, so that was pretty cool...

P.S. Pretty sure most of you guys know this, but did you know you can pick jellyfish up with your hands??? I swear its the truth. Its cause the palms of your hands have no hair folicals on them. So you can pick up a jelly fish and throw it at someone... Or pick one up that is approching and toss it away from you... Just a little FYI...

At this point I've pretty much learned to ignore the stings. Just a minor annoyance. I guess you get used to it.

    Sharks are another story...

fish don't have hair folicals, either, but they still get stung by the bastards.

what it more likely has to do w/ is the fact that it's only the tentacles of the jelly fish that sting, not the floaty, jelly-like bell that the tentacles hang from. so you can grab that w/out getting stung. just be carefully not to grab it too roughly b/c your fingers'll go thru it & get stung.

There were so many skates in the water in Ocean City last night it was unnerving.

nearly 30 years of experience tells me not to trust you.

unless you're talking about moon jellies, the clear ones w/ no long tentacles. if that's the case, then you're right. the nematocysts that cause the sting aren't long enough to penetrate human skin.

but i have a feeling that you're not referring to those. that you're talking about the red ones that can be a real pain the ass (common name: lion's mane).
