This review doesn't make it seem all that good:

I would personally recommend San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua however. Sweet place.

    Nica's great!

I would highly recommend trying Nicaragua. Not nearly as crowded as Costa Rica. (not yet anyway) Playa Colorado is great, but the absolute best is about 40 miles up the coast at Popoyo and Pangas. You can get some goods deals on lodging at Hacienda Iguana. Not much social life up there though. If you want to surf Colorado, you can stay in San Juan del Sur and have a great time in addition to enjoying the surf. Google San Jaun Del Sur and you'll find all kind of links about surf trips.

clearly you re confused..Colorado is close enough to popoyo..if you want to have foot access to Colorado you STAY in Hacienda Iguana or even Rancho Santana..not San Juan del Sur. And Pangas is just a short walk from Colorado...So i dont know what you're talkin bout.

    Nica

I own a 3br, 2bs condo @ Hacienda Iguana. The development is Hacienda Iguana. The actual condo bldg is named Villa Rio Dulce. Located directly on Playa Colorado. Panga Drop is about 1/2 mile up the beach from Colorado (you walk it). Popoyo is not 40 miles away, as someone posted, it's a short boat ride up the coast from Colorado.

Colorado is a shortboard wave. It can get really good. When I was there in April, the thing was huge. Like 20' & higher on sets. Panga also can get big but it's not so much a shortboard wave. The thing about Nica is that if one break isn't exactly what you like, there's many more. The offshore winds are consistent - - nearly every day.

Other breaks are Yankee, Madera, Playgrounds & Popoyo. And more. Madera is good for advanced & beginners, depending on the swell. So, if you have someone in your party who isn't up for monster water, Madera is cool for them.

If you want to check out other breaks, best bet is to hire a panga (boat). Usually 80 - 100 usd per day. Get one with a canopy, the sun is intense. You get some guys & split the cost of the boat & you get to surf several breaks in one day & home before sundown.

From the Managua airport, it's 3 hour's drive to Iguana. In the rainy season, you must have 4wd. Even in dry season I strongly rec 4wd. Once you get away from the capital, the roads get rugged. The dirt road into Iguana from town is 38 clicks of washed out, bumpy, rock-strewn road.

Stock up on food supplies for the full kitchen when you go through Rivas. There's no supermarket near Iguana. Just small local shack stores that have very little in the way of foodstuffs. My kitchen is fully equipped, so you can cook up some feasts without going out.

When you do go out, don't waste your money eating at Don Eloy's near the golf course: it's overpriced American bar food. Instead, eat at Yolanda's restaurant. Small local place out on the main road about 15 clicks from the Iguana main gate. Awesome fresh & natural food, you won't get sick either. Full-on fresh fish dinner with a few cervezas will set you back less than 10 usd. Dang, I really miss that food. One of the best restaurants in the world, IMHO. Simple & healthy & so good.

BTW, the Nica cops will pull you over if you're traveling w boards on your roof. It's the game they play: nail the gringo for dinero. You just be patient as they theaten to send your drivir's license to Managua. They want some of your cash. Never pay more than 20 usd. Just claim poverty or that you don't understand. Eventually they take the cash & you go on your way.

Rent my place !It's gorgeous, all the amenities, fully AC'd, balcony overlooking the Pacific, housekeeping. 150 per night. Shoot me a message.

There is a break south of SJDS also called Colorado. It is near the Remansa resort area just north of the CR border. Perhaps you're right that I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm just a dumb gringo whao happens to own property outside of SJDS.

    and...

JStank is correct: you don't stay in San Juan del Sur if you want to surf every day. SJDS is a 50 minute drive from Iguana. SJDS is the town where they have restaurants & touristy stuff, but the nightlife generally sucks there. Best bet is to stay out at Iguana, hire pangs to go to different breaks if you get the trvln jones.

But you will be so surfed out from Colorado that you will be quite happy just going back to the condo, having a good meal & zzzzzzzing out to the sound of the Pacific Ocean crashing on the beach just a few hundred yards away.

    eh?

    It's Playa Remanso, not remansa.....

And the CR border is a long way to go to look for breaks. The good breaks are located in the other direction from SJDS. You may own property there, but I'm concerned about your sense of direction, bro....
