Yes... Get 3mm boots for spring and fall, and 5mm boots for winter. I think 7mm boots are a bit overkill, but that's a personal opinion. Lots of guys swear by 7mm boots for the coldest months. But to answer your question, yea.. your instincts are good - get a pair of 3mm boots. They're very comfortable, and will put off the "luggage" of thick winter boots for a good month on either end of the cold water season. It's not that your feet will be too warm. It's that they're just so damn heavy and awkward.
