pipeline is the surfing mecca and its great and wonderful , but how many waves are these guys catching in a four hour session . it just seems so crowded that its almost not even fun looking , 200 people in the lineup paddle battle for every wave then you have to worry about the million dudes caught on the inside . on the east coast atleast you know the colder it gets the less people out. pipe never slacks off just millions of people all the time

well Pipeline basically functions like so:
you have the top guys-Kalani Chapman, Mark Healy, etc. they get about 80% of the waves there, no questions asked.
then you have the guys that rip, but arent really diehard pipe guys. they get good waves, just because of their skill (unless they're total assholes), but arent as revered
after that are the average surfers, who can surf, but just arent as skilled. they maybe get 1 or 2 waves if they get lucky.
at the bottom of the foodchain are the "novelty" surfers who have heard about the place and decide to paddle out on a funboard completely unknowingly. they create quite a hazard to the other surfers, and are generally looked down upon by the heavies. these are usually the guys you see getting the **** beat out of them because they dropped in on a local.

i would recommend watching "The Arena". its a pretty interesting movie, and basically describes Pipeline in general. the lineup, the wave, dangers, swells, etc.
