On Wednesday, March 19th, a very non-typical east coast storm system created one of the biggest days this winter for surfers along the Outer Banks. A low pressure pushed off the Mid Atlantic Tuesday and strengthened significantly as it pushed eastward away from the coastline.

Typically as storm systems push away from the coast, there is only small to moderate sized potential for East Coast swell production. However, this storm had such a strong circulation, that a powerful ENE fetch developed in time to send swells towards the Outer Banks, which peaked on the buoys around 10 ft at 15 seconds. Many areas along the Mid Atlantic saw poor conditions with SSW winds chopping things up, but the winds were offshore at the more north facing breaks along the Nags Head area of the Outer Banks.

The next day, March 20, a frontal system pushed through and threw in a solid S wind swell to mix in with the fading ground swell. As the front moved offshore, it was time to head south to the Lighthouse where the NW winds groomed things up. Matt Lusk was there to capture some great photos from this two day barrage of surf.
