MONTHLY TROPICAL WEATHER SUMMARY
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
8 AM PDT WED JUN 1 2005

FOR THE EASTERN NORTH PACIFIC...EAST OF 140 DEGREES WEST LONGITUDE..

ONE TROPICAL CYCLONE...HURRICANE ADRIAN...FORMED DURING THE MONTH OF
MAY. NAMED TROPICAL CYCLONES IN MAY ARE SOMEWHAT INFREQUENT
EVENTS... WITH AN AVERAGE OF ONE TROPICAL STORM EVERY TWO YEARS AND
A HURRICANE ONLY EVERY FOUR YEARS.

A POST-STORM ANALYSIS INDICATES THAT ADRIAN DID NOT MAKE LANDFALL AS
A HURRICANE IN EL SALVADOR EARLY ON THE 20TH... AS ASSESSED
OPERATIONALLY. BASED ON EXAMINATION OF SATELLITE DATA AND SURFACE
OBSERVATIONS... INCLUDING SHIP DATA OBTAINED AFTER THE EVENT... IT
HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT ADRIAN WEAKENED OFFSHORE... WITH THE
CENTER MOVING EASTWARD EARLY ON THE 20TH AND ENTERING THE GULFO DE
FONSECA... JUST EAST OF EL SALVADOR... AS A TROPICAL DEPRESSION.
THE DEPRESSION THEN MADE LANDFALL ON THE PACIFIC COAST OF HONDURAS
DURING THE EVENING OF THE 20TH.

ADRIAN ORIGINATED FROM A TROPICAL WAVE THAT CROSSED CENTRAL AMERICA
AND ENTERED THE EASTERN NORTH PACIFIC ON THE 15TH. CONVECTIVE
ORGANIZATION GRADUALLY INCREASED AS THE WAVE MOVED SLOWLY WESTWARD.
A TROPICAL DEPRESSION FORMED ON THE 17TH ABOUT 470 MI
WEST-SOUTHWEST OF EL SALVADOR...AND IT STRENGTHENED INTO A TROPICAL
STORM LATER THAT DAY. THE STORM MOVED ON A VERY ATYPICAL TRACK...
GENERALLY TOWARD THE EAST-NORTHEAST... AND REACHED HURRICANE
STRENGTH ON THE 19TH ABOUT 120 MI SOUTHWEST OF EL SALVADOR BEFORE
ABRUPTLY WEAKENING JUST OFFSHORE. EVEN THOUGH THE CENTER DID NOT
MAKE LANDFALL IN EL SALVADOR... REPORTS FROM THERE INDICATE THAT
HEAVY RAINFALL CAUSED FLOODING AND SOME MUD SLIDES. NO REPORTED
CASUALTIES TO DATE HAVE BEEN DIRECTLY LINKED TO THE STORM.
