Yes, there were kitesurfers and standups out today, trying to surf in that churning, stormy, negative low tide mess. A board washed up in Queens without a rider. EMS and police were searching for an unattended vehicle, body or person washed down the beach. Please stay out of the water in conditions like this. It's NOT worth it.
It was bigger than predicted today, the plus sets were EASILY coming in at 6-7', and with the wind blowing the way it was, you either had them walling up or just blasting down the line in a huge closeout. A lot of people were having issues paddling out. Current picked up a lot during the day as 2 different swells filled in. It might have been a better day with better winds, it was very messy a lot of the time I was out.
Sets were a little inconsistent, but when they came in, it was pretty fun. Lefts peeling off of the jetty, good drops, little tubes, not too many people out. All in all, a good day and another marathon session. I need a nap. ::zzzzz:: ; )
Sweet little peelers, not all jetties were breaking, though. Got a couple of good cover-ups. ; ) Was out for 4 hours, just a nice day even though my feet got cold as soon as I took my boots off. LOL. People seem to be dropping like flies because of the weather (yay!)...just me and 2 friends out, swapping waves and acting like idiots. Water is crystal right now, you can see your feet and the fish are jumping around trying to escape the fisherman!
Angled swell continues, albeit without gale force winds. ; ) Barrels and A frames to be had, some closeouts, too - I guess the way the waves are breaking on the sandbar. Much better than yesterday, but that current is a real pain in the hindquarters. ; )
Eh, I don't know. Some people were really enjoying themselves. Others were plainly being denied. It really depends on what jetty you go to. Higher astronomical tides today, jetties are covered, so be careful. Longshore currents are fast, winds feel gale force at times, I wore gloves to ward off "waxy finger". Some people were out there in bare feet and bare hands - you're a lot more warmblooded that I am. If the winds were a bit less strong, I can imagine that today would have been very nice, however the combination of sideband swell and super winds wasn't working for me - but it may work for you.
Surf nirvana this AM at Long Beach. Most sets rolling in at head to 2 ft OH with plus easily up to 3' OH and then some...dirty shorebreak barrels...insane closeouts...just bombing all over the place with no end in sight. NYBB and unsOund pros were sick and so much fun!!!! Wind switch in the afternoon kind of blew things around a bit, but this AM was really just perfect.
There are some real bombs out there today. I used the surfers as a rough guide as to size and they are breaking pretty much stomach to shoulder on a regular basis, with occasional head and maybe even OH sets coming through. They are walling up pretty fast - I got smashed a few times, unfortunately. But the rides that I did get were long, luscious and green. A lot of good sponger talent out there today with spins, airs, reverses, DK and other fun stuff being thrown around, and the surfers are laying down airs and cutbacks. Nice day!
I got there late - tide was coming up which was making everything a bit too deep. Mostly choppy/disorganized waist high wind swell, inconsistent slightly more organized lines off the jetty coming through once in awhile. Still a very good July, I am so not complaining.
1 ft/14.8 sec - fun little peelers. 3 ft/11.4 sec - closeout city. Tis the way of the sandbar, I guess. Inconsistent waist-stomach surf with light south winds this AM. A little bumpy, good suckouts and closeout barrels. Fun little shorebreak to be had. Better than flat, just wish that bigger, better quality GS would hold up on our beaches. ; )
It's kind of late, but I figured I'd put it up anyway. Weak, textured knee high swell out there today with light winds out of the SE. A few good rides to be had, mostly relaxing and hanging out. Don't see too much on the horizon for tomorrow, waiting to see if Bertha sends some GS our way during the week....
When the winds behaved, the waves were awesome waist plus peelers but when the onshores kicked up they got pretty dumpy - there was some decent shorebreak action to be had here and there with the right wave at the right time...all in all a fun day. Happy Fourth to everyone!
Fun - paddle out
