Back Home! What an extreme from 90 degree Fahrenheit heat temp in Costa to 22 degrees in Corolla. The wind is out of the ENE blowing around 17 mph. Combine this with the air temp and you get a wind in the low single digits. The water temp has finally dropped below the 40 degrees mark this season. Wave height is around waist high and swell direction is same as the wind direction. GARY, CORLLA SURF SHOP

Flying back from Costa to DC today. I have so many great images of Santa Teresa in my head. It looks like we will be heading back into colder weather. The surf finally looks small compared to the Nor’easter Corolla has been experiencing while we are gone. From the few pictures I’m seeing, we may have lost some dune line. GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP

Remember: Stats are for the OBX and the pics are from Costa Rica. It looks as if the northearstern that has been hitting the OBX for last couple of days has turned around. Current wind is out of WSW. Smaller but cleaner surf is what I'm hearing. In Costa, not much bigger. Head high on the peaks and chest high on the sections. Taking a break while the switching Costa winds have their way with the ocean. Last day tomorrow in Santa Teresa, then we start the journey back....actually miss Corolla.

We got up early in an attempt to beat the infamous Costa wind. The 1st 20 minutes were decent. Peak 2’ overhead, sections nose high. But then a swirling wind snuck & I got my session short. Next session will be about an hour before the sunset. Word from Corolla is that the wind is off-shore and wave height could be overhead. Air & water are matching each other at 44 degrees Fahrenheit. (Keeping my fingers crossed: at least we haven’t had pipe busting single digit Corolla air temps.) NOTES: REMEMBER, STATS ARE FOR COROLLA, PICS ARE FROM COSTA. GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP

I just checked reports for the Corolla. It looks like we have a post Super Bowl northeastern building. Wave height is almost double overhead with a strong North wind blowing. Air temps are in the higher 30’s/lower 40’s. At Banana Beach, Costa Rica, this am, it is wind dependent. Right in front, or cabin, it is side shore. But due south the wind direction is almost off-shore. Wave height is (depending on the break) is at least head high: GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP (stats are for the OBX, pics are from Costa)

I just checked the reports on the OBX/Corolla. Looks like too much wind out of the ENE. Wave height seems to be overhead and choppy surface conditions. In Santa Teresa, wave height has dropped to head high. REMINDER: PICS ARE FROM COSTA, STATS ARE FOR COROLLA. HAPPY SUPER BOWL SUNDAY, BE WITH YOUR FAMILY AND YELL AT THE TV!!! GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP

2nd day in Santa Teresa. Wave height has picked up to about 2’ overhead. I had a good season yesterday afternoon in Playa Carmen. We are staying Banana Beach which has more hidden rock formations you don’t see until you are right on top. BACK IN COROLLA: Looks as if there is decent surf. Wave height back more should be about chest high. Water & air temps are matching each other at 44 degrees Fahrenheit. NOTES: STATS ARE THE OBX, PICS ARE FROM SANTA TERESA. GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP

Finally reached Santa Teresa!! Our 2.5 cylinder car jugged through the mountains and we made it late last night. Surf right in front is about a little over head with a ESE slowly building. Back in Corolla the report (I think) is waist plus with a N to NW wind creating chop. My statistics (tides & temps) are for Corolla. My pics are from Santa Teresa. Mid-way through our speed tour of Ocean City to DC connect in Orlando to San Jose to Santa Teresa. Currently on a 7:00 flight connecting in MCO. My board made it on the plane. (only a $25 board fee)…somebody likes me. Weather in DC mild 47 with drizzle. Reports form the Outer Banks: air 47 degrees, sell is at least waist high and a ESE wind that is creating surface chop: NOTE: STAY POSTED! I’LL TRY TO KEEP REPORTING OUR TRIP UNTIL WE MAKE IT SANTA TERSA. GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP

Corolla, NC:
The last day of January is turning a mild and warm winter day. Corolla is about 20 minutes away from high tide. Wave height is only knee cap & hardly breaking due to the tide. But there might be chance of catching a longboard wave once the tide starts dropping. NOTE: I’LL REPORT FROM COROLLA TOMORROW, THEN ON TO OCEAN CITY TOMORROW, THEN DC AND THEN COSTA. Sunny but cold winter day in Corolla. There is a slight improvement in surf conditions from yesterday. Wave height is about knee cap high. The tide flipped an hour age. The wind out of the ESE with minimal wind chill. You could probably get by with a 4/3 with boots, gloves and a hood. Water temp is in the low 40’s which is actually a little on the for this time of year. NOTE: I’LL KEEP REPORTING FROM COROLLA THROUGH MONDAY. ON TUESDAY, I’LL REPORT FROM OCEAN CITY. WEDNESDAY,I’LL BE CHECKING THE SURF AT REAGAN AIRPORT IN DC?

Corolla, NC:
Corolla continues to have small surf. Wave height is only ankle slapper to knee cap. We are coming out of high tide, so it is hard to pick out any breaks that might be working. Air temp is mild, in the mid to high 40’s. H2O is in the low 40’s. It will be interesting to see how low water temp drop this winter. 2015 summer water temps were extremely high and the water warmed up very early. NOTE: 2016 WILL BE OUR 20TH YEAR COROLLA. WE ARE VERY EXCITED ABOUT SOME GREAT NEW PRODUCTS WE SAW AT THE SURF EXPO. GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP

Corolla is back to cold grey winter day with no surf. The great surf we had yesterday has been trashed by a ENE wind. Wave height is not even ankle slapper. Plus the pictures show overcast skies. Wind chill is in the low 30’s. NOTE: THE COROLLA SURF SCHOOL WILL BE OPENING IN MARCH. IT IS NOT TOO EARLY TO USE OUR ON-LINE RESERVATION SERVICE TO RESERVE YOUR LESSON TIMES FOR THE UP-COMING SUMMER. GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP
