Located on the North Shore of Oahu, the famous winter surf break known as Pipeline serves as the proving grounds for only the most skilled surfers in the world. With razor-sharp coral reef, hidden caves, and heavy conditions, Pipeline is recognized as one of the most dangerous waves, and much respect is given to the athletes that brave the fast, steep drops.
However, surfers aren't the only ones putting their lives at risk at Pipeline. A team of highly skilled rescue personnel known as the North Shore lifeguards, are constantly immersing themselves in the most dangerous of situations in order to ensure the highest level of safety as possible. From no rescues for days in a row, to rescues every half hour, the absolutely no way to predict the kind of work day is in store.
Listen to North Shore Lifeguards, Ian Forrester and Robert Dorr, talk about their lives as key rescue personnel at Pipeline and the type of rescues that occur.
The off-shore that started yesterday continues today as well, but this is the ‘X’ factor. The wind has knocked the juice and size out of the swell. We are going from low tide to high at this posting. I’m just not seeing any breaks that are really working today. Air temps should be warm and the forecast is for spring like temperatures. We just need some swell. These conditions are typical for: strong SWS winds and minimal weather systems in the south Atlantic generating any ground swell. Monday is an improvement over yesterday. The wind has clocked around from the ENE to SSE and wind speed has died down. I took these pictures at Shad Street looking North towards Corolla Light. Low tide was at 8:08 AM, so we have an incoming tide at this posting. Wave height is knee to thigh which means you could dog long boarding. Besides cleaner surf conditions the wind chill that we had yesterday is not an issue today. NOTE: COROLLA SURF SHOP IS STILL SELING ALL OF OUR RENTAL EQUIPMENT:SURFBOARDS, STAND UP PADDLE BOARDS, BIKES AND WETSUITS: GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP
We were all hoping we could dodge winter: whoops! The surf is rough with a strong wind coming off the ocean from the ENE! Wave height is around chest high with choppy surface conditions. The real issue is a wind chill that feels like 28 degrees Fahrenheit. Current air temps are in the mid-30’s but with the wind speed, it is just a cold day on the beach: NOTE: OUR ON-LINE SURF RESERVATION CUSTOMERS GET TH EBEST SELECTION OF TIME SLOTS. PLEASE RESERVE YOUR LESSONS BEFORE YOU COME DOWN TO THE BEACH. GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP

I just took these pictures in front of my home break! The wind is coming out of the ENE as well as the swell. Wave height is waist to almost chest but the on-shore wind is making conditions very choppy. Plus this AM’s air temp was 46. Combine wind speed and cooler air temps mean that Corolla has a win chill in the mid 30’s: NOTE: WE ARE OPEN TODAY AND TOMORROW. GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP
