beachbreak... I went back and read my first post, and see what you're saying. Please don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying, "you suck if you don't do airs." I'm saying that's what appears to me to be the attitude of the surfing "industry" and most of it's followers... an attitude that I do not hold myself. Please know that I speak from my own personal perspective. I talk to a lot of people, young and old, about how they want to surf, how they approach a wave, section, turn, etc. ... and how they want their boards to take them there. In order to even have that conversation, I try to ride as many different boards as I can, keep current with trends in design, and keep my own personal surfing performance as high as possible for my age. With that in mind, I'll admit that I do like to think I know something about what I speak, and I will occasionally take the liberty of speaking for others. But as you've pointed out, I do not speak for everyone, and it would be misleading and grossly egotistical for me to assume for one second that I think I could... or even should. I'm just trying to speak from my own perspective... that's all I've got. It's all any of us have. All I'm trying to say is that when a guy says, "I'm sick of watching airs," and a bunch of other guys agree, I'd like to suggest that (1) it's simply too much of a good thing, and/or (2) the novelty has finally wore off, and now people are starting to distinguish between good aerial surfing and bad aerial surfing. And there's nothing wrong with that. My old man used to say, "If it's all good, than none of it's good." Meaning... you need to be able to discern between what's good and bad... that there's those surfers who do airs with some degree of distinction over others. And, finally... thankfully... people are starting to figure that out, including many of the people here, who have the where-with-all to even notice. (oops... there I go again!)
thanks.i'm really sorry i was so rough, but all your qualifications in this case mean nothing to me.i don't really care when it comes to this topic.i think airs are non-surfing showing-off athletes.ride on or in the wave, not over it.on the other hand, even though i think you're dead wrong here,i don't know it,nor do i think i'm right, but, airs,so lame, might just go away over time, and people could start surfing again instead.i've been riding waves since the 70's,but,it would be presumptuous of me to say i have a clue what others get out of it.i'm different than you.i'm into your knowledge, and often appreciate it,but, not this time.the first 11 people all agreed with 42 and then you had to go and ruin it with all your b.s. wisdom.airs are lame and we know it.it's not that technical.

Well, I never landed an air on a surfboard, but I always get air out of the bowl at the skatepark and I love the feeling of being in the air. So I don't know about you guys, but they just seem like they're fun to do. I wouldn't waste a whole wave to do one though, it's something you do at the end of your ride, like when I skate bowl. I carve around really fast, and then when I'm done I launch out.
Maybe KooKy, the new generation of surfers has already defined their style of (aerial) surfing so whether you agree or not they'll going keep charging the air until the next style emerges. Its their time. we had ours so let them have theirs. Surfing style is a personal thing so if they're stoked lies in the air, go for it, the rest of us will track where its more wet ................
good point.i just don't buy those mags or watch those videos,so,who cares.i'm glad they all suck.they think i suck.maybe i do.
To end discussion. do yourselves a favor and watch the third video down called "lost interest" http://marinelayerproductions.com/. Dane in mexico. those are the turns i wanna see. those are the barrels i wanna see. he knows when a turn is better than an air, and vice versa
This forum is full of close minded douchebags. What the **** is surfing? SUP is not surfing, spongin is not surfing, short boarders who get air is not surfing, longboarding is not surfing, at least to you dope smoking "soul" surfers. Where are you ***s when its double overhead and the water is 40 degrees in OC? Probably out drinking beer watching some overpaid douches play a stupid game. Then you go home and wank off fantasizing about miniscule summer swell and your urban SUV with your "stick" on top showing off for fat wahines..... ... Haha ha hahahahah.... Go green... shoot yourself in the head.
40 degrees? f--k, that's fairly comfy for the winter! i'm still rocking the 4/3 when it's 40 degrees! btw, i never said anything is or isn't surfing, simply that i'm sick of seeing the same damn thing all the time. i will say this: it seems like YOU'RE the closeminded douche here.
yeah,40 degrees is warm at my beachbreak.this tough guy should drive up and paddle out alone in the ice storm in february like me,not smoking pot or out drinking beer.just surfing.all year.and if the thread is 'i'm sick of watching airs' why is that so upsetting?they think i suck,i think they suck,it's the way i like it.don't see any airs here, anyway.
then maybe they should all take up kite surfing or hang gliding. surfing is about being in the water, and riding waves (water), so shouldn't most maneuvers take place in the water? if the wave is going to close out and a nice air section shows up, then sure go for it, but i don't really think an entire wave should be wasted just to throw one air halfway before its even done breaking
Amen reverend! I think if the little chillin's today sat down and watched Morning of the Earth, it would lend a new perspective. Old doesn't always mean obsolete. In this case, I would call it "classic". MP is the f'n man.
Oh, and I'm definitely not "dissing" the aerials, but only saying that there are other styles equally amazing.
