Quick Silver Pro New York

Everyone is looking forward to it. Either to love it or hate on it. Should be an interesting event. Hopefully there will be mulitple days of solid swell to give the guys a chance to showcase the area... People were definately talking about it at this last week's event in HB. A lot of people who dont follow the tour too closely have all been telling me how the NY event is news to them and they all thought it was actually scheduled in Ocean Beach, San Francisco.... Which is a notoriously heavy as$ beach break that sucks up swell like a vacuuma delivers pounding barrels year round... That was the choices and they went with NY for the marketability. It would be rad to see a sick event in NY... The HB US Open was graced with some nice hurricane swell for their event last week. We should hope that the trend continues back east. But if the 10 day event window falls sh**y or flat, and OB SF is going ballistic the whole time, people are gonna talk sh**. So lets hope for the best. No one wants to see the world best surfers mushing around in slop... Although the world champ would just destroy it anyway andgo for 11!

 

the rip curl search pro is actually being held in obsf this year...in november! gnarly...from what i've seen of that place, i want no parts of it at that time of year.
i have mixed emotions about this. i think it'll be pretty cool to see the world's best surfing the same sort of waves i've spent my whole life surfing & to see what they can do w/ them, but at the same time, knowing that this event is clearly just a marketing tool so that quicksilver can sell more **** to non-surfers kinda rubs me the wrong way. not to mention that i think that east coast surfing doesn't NEED any more exposure. what? we need validation by the world tour/an australian wetsuit & clothing company? i don't think so...that all said, i hope one of the local east coast guys that got into the event blows up & wins the thing. that would be super rad!

 

yes...having the event in NY is a total sell out by quiksilver. I too am annoyed by that. It has nothing to do with any thing except commercialism at it's finest.

 

At least Quiksilver puts some of that money back into surfing and doesn't just sponge off the lifestyle like Hollister.

 

if the last few months are an indicator of whats to come theyll be twiddling their thumbs watching flatness. and its a money grab deal all the way whether its in ny or africa so whatever

I think it would be sick to see those guys surf LB at its best, but at the same it would be pretty funny to see them get skunked and groveling in knee high swell for the million. Either way it should be entertaining, I was thinking about heading up for a day, but I dunno if itll be worth the traffic/crowds when I could just watch it at home. Anyone planning on going?

My feeling exactly...and while I'd love to surf NY during a solid hurricane swell:

1. We've been skunked thus far, and the last thing I want to do is fight a bunch of pro's for waves after waiting all summer for waves. The whole freaking circus surfs, not just the top 44. Every spot within an hour will be packed.

2. Totally aside from the Quik marketing tactic, I have a feeling most of the pro's see this whole thing as just a chance to go party. The guys who have a chance to win the title might care, but the rest are probably way more interested in spending a few nights rolling in the big apple. Maybe I'm just pessimistic, but I think even the sponsors will encourage this. I predict at least a few big surf mag's publishing articles that look a lot like US Weekly of your favorite pro getting jiggy with it at the clubs.
Ocean Beach will be big for sure, especially in November. Unfortunately that place sometimes stays blown out for days on end. I think they'd be much better off holding the event at Moss Landing...I mean, uhhhh, I didn't say that out loud.

 

I will be there 9/9/11 - 9/11/11, hope to god that there will be waves, North Eastern or Hurricane swell.

I feel everyone’s mixed views about the event. It’s a great opportunity for the surfers of the east coast to view a pro surfing event live. I have never seen a pro contest before other than the Belmar Pro. Plus, you may get a chance to surf with some pros. In what sport can you hang with professionals and perform on the field as them?

Just hopping for some good waves on 9/9 or 9/10/2011…

It is amazing to see those guys in person. I remember surfing Ehukai in 2ft slop; all of a sudden Mick Fanning was next to me and started just RIPPING. I mean, it was the craziest small wave surfing I've ever seen. Not to mention how surfing around guys like that will make you better. I don't know how that works, but I've found it to be very true in my own experience. It just sucks when you paddle out at Rocky Point and instantly recognize 8-10 pro's and realize you aren't going to get any waves. I would think there are lots of spots on Long Island since it's so...ermmm...long? Hopefully that's the case, and the locals don't get pushed out of their spots.
