This may seem like a dumb question but I was wondering what kind of stretches/yoga people do that FOCUS on muscles used exclusively for surfing- core, back, legs, arms... I know it sounds like an "old man" kind of thing (I'm soon to be 23) but I take physical health and exercise pretty seriously. Proper exercising and stretching improves muscle recovery allowing more sessions and keeps your body functional, allowing us to drop in well after retirement!!!
Not a dumb question at all http://www.yogaforsurfers.com/ go there I use these ......If you do these exercises you will def notice a difference. Otherwise if your ever in the NJ area you can check out Bryan in Deal he teaches surf yoga. http://www.Summalove.com
you will benefit greatly from doing yoga regularly, since your will be stretching your entire body and also strengthening your core.
Y4bs... I have been in contact with Peggy and David Hall since 2004 and have been using all of their YFS DVD's on a regular basis. I was just sent the newest one from Peggy call Yoga for Board Sports (Y4BS was supposed to be out in Jan/Feb but was just released on May 31st). I think it's a perfect complement for the other YFS's DVD's already out there. There's a card that highlights the "Best 5 Stretches Before You Ride" which are really good to do on the beach. As far as Functional Training goes for surfing specifically (Resistance, Cardio, Flexibility)...that will take you a bit more in the way of research. There are A LOT of great things that can be done to help you get fit for surfing. Being able to "pyramid" those techniques to prevent injury and add explosiveness it the trick...finding what works best for you, etc. Definitely check out the YFS series and the Y4BS DVD…tell Peggy that Frank from NJ sent you!
Thanks for all the good advice and quick replies. I will DEF look into YFS and pass along your message. I am recovering from a dislocated (right, dominant hand) shoulder. I saw my doc for the follow-up and just got the green light for surfing YESTERDAY!!! And now with the possibility of surf coming this weekend, I couldn't be happier. I gotta get my Walden 6'6 CD wet!
definitely jog around the beach a little bit before stretching/yoga also. the jogging will warm up your body and make the process several times more effective. but a cooldown jog is pretty unnecessary as you will have been surfing hah. good luck
YOU ASKED A GREAT QUESTION. I have been doing formal yoga for 4 1/2 years. message me and I will tell you everything you need to know.
I've see it referenced as a Dynamic Warm-Up...it's far more effective than static stretching and easy exercise...it's used by all kinds of athletes just before they start their activity. The Hobgoods use something similar to it.
Hey, I have suffered from multiple shoulder dislocations. It got so bad, that my shoulder would come out and eventually i got surgery. And then I ended up getting a second surgery, because they didn't repair the damage totally the first time. Stretching is good, but my advice to you is definitely do regular strengthening for your shoulders. And, do make sure your shoulder is good before paddling back out, because surfing puts a lot of strain on your shoulders, and then push-up type motion is one of the worst motions. One of the best shoulder exercises is to use the extra large rubber bands. Let me know if you need any more advice on specific shoulder exercises. Surgery was necessary for me, but if I had to do it over again, I would have tried to strengthen my shoulders as much as possible and definitely not push my recovery time. My shoulder doesn't come out anymore, but I have lost some range in my shoulder movements due to surgery.
I do some variation of the this exercise routine...not all those exercises, but some. I'm 39 and do something 4x/week. This could be any combo of surf and gym. If there is a good stretch of surf then...forget it, I SURF. If the surf really sucks then I'll hit the gym 4x that week. I have found this works best for me. Less than that is too little, more than that, I feel burned out and stiff. I do almost no stretching before surf but I do about 10 minutes afterward.
trying not to get too off topic, but wat do you guys think about doing pushups and pull ups as surfing excercises? I understand their probably not the best excercises for surfing........
i used to do them, but i would always feel more restricted as far as flexibility afterwards. personally, i've found that yoga and running have been the best combo. the yoga gives you a nice, strong core and great flexibility. and running keeps the stamina up
i swim for a few miles when im not surfing it helps your paddling. but also if you snap a leash in big surf and have to swim in for your board your good at swimming. but i also strecth before i go surfing.
In regards to Yoga, I recently caught onto this trend and really want to start doing it more and more. I have browsed Comcast On Demand and they have a pretty good variety of different workouts. What is an ideal yoga session in regards to time? I have been doing this 10 minute yoga workout off Comcast when I get back from running about 2 miles. I have seen others on there that are roughly 30 to 50 minutes... I take it that it would be good to do those 30-50 minute yoga workouts as much as possible (prob 2-3 times a week). Can anyone give some insight on what they do as a yoga workout and time wise?
Ya, Yoga is one of the best things you can do. I take classes, which are an hour long. The class can vary greatly depending on who the teacher is, but if you get a good teacher then taking a class is great. When I dont take classes, I tried to do yoga on my own, but usually spend much less time, 15-30minutes. But, any amount you can do is helpful.
How often are the classes you take? and I know it varies, but what do you pay for them if you don't mind me asking?
