When I first started I only had a 4/3 and boardshorts and thought THAT was all I really needed. Now I also have a 3/2 and spring suit and I think the spring suit was definitely not a waste, in fact I wear it all summer long. I personally hate the 2 mil tops and would prefer the 2 mil spring suit to shorts/rashguard. No top to ride up and no sand getting into your shorts and crotchal region.
Well, I use www.cleansnipe.com to look for gear because it monitors all of the ODAT sites. I have seen the Hyperflex AMP Aerodome 5/4/3 (not sure if you would be interested in this one) for $99 on several occasions over the past few weeks. If that suit isn't to your liking, I'm sure you can find a different one at a sweet price. The cool thing about this site is you can set up alerts for certain gear when they are certain prices, which is what I did for this one. It will send you an email and a text when it is available and then you just have to jump on it quickly. Unfortunately, I got the message last week while I was out in the water. Ironically, I was going to get out of the water sooner but the waves were good. By the time I got in, the deal was over. I regret nothing! So now I just wait until I get the next alert. Happy hunting! My only complaint about the site is that they never have any GNU snowboards on there. Boooo.
ive considered cutting the sleeves on one of my 3/2s but the idea of hacking through a rubber wetsuit scares me. doesn't it fray out? shouldn't the ends be closed?
It works fine and doesnt fray. I've converted two old 3/2s into SS 3/2s. PUT THE SUIT ON, mark where to make the cut (you will cut the sleeves too short if you just eyeball it with the suit off) take it off and go for it with a sharp pair of scissors.
every cut & thickness has it's place, IMO...yes, you can get by in the northeast w/ a 5/4/3, a 3/2, & a top, but you'll be happier w/ a few more in your wetsuit quiver. 4/3's are good for those colder mornings in the late fall, when the water's hovering around 50 or so...a short sleeve full is great in the spring when the water's still chilly but the air's warm (think late may/early june post-school sessions. air temp: 85, water temp: 60), short sleeve springs are good for summer sessions during a long run of swell when chaffing starts to become an issue...a little mix up gives the boys a rest. long sleeve springs are good in the fall, when the air cools off & water's still warm (these past few mornings, for example...& on into sept.). tops are great in early summer & even during mid-summer dawn patrols. so yea, if you can afford a suit or 2 beyond the absolute basics, they're good additions. like i said, you can get by w/ a 5/4/3 & 3/2, but if you've got a bit of extra coin to throw around, the other cuts are good additions & can make your surfing like a LOT more comfortable. i've seen a lot of guys these last few days in fullsuits that just didn't seem happy...prob. b/c they were too warm despite the chill in the air.
I agree with Mitchell. I usually cut the sleeves off my 3/2 when I get a new one. The sleeves don't fray. I have done it 3 or 4 times. However as light as the wetsuits have become it almost isn't that much of a difference
I cut the sleeves of my 3/2 Body glove, put a few stiches and glue at end of seams, works great. I saved the sleeves and sometimes use them by putting the sleeves on first them putting the wetsuit on over them, makes kind of a seal if you pull the sleeves up your arms a bit.
Don that's pretty damn ghetto. I got one from these guys www.facebook.com/thermoskinusa and so far it's nice. shortsleeve full all the way.
the one time i did that, i turned the arms into beer cozies...they've lasted longer than the suit did!
i remember when i didn't have a 3/2 i'd take a wetsuit top and put it under an old springsuit. it was pretty ghetto/ridiculous looking but it actually kept me really warm. if anyone short on cash has an old springsuit and a top lying around i recommend doing this. kept me warm until 5/4 season
actually i'd wait matt johnson. i got a quiksilver 2mm cypher regular price at $220 i believe and got it for $115 on jackssurfboards.com in may. they always have a blow out sale then like 30-60% off. you can tough it out for now then get a top of the line suit for cheap
