Andrew, how many "cops" do you think an average department has assigned to the detective bureua? Because all the "cops" driving around in their cars don't follow up calls for investigations aka "crimes". They are too busy handling car accidents, home alarms, fights, domestic disputes, shop lifting, noise complaints, neighbor disputes etc.......this list goes on. The "cops" you see in the cars take the initial report and the station detective follow it up. Most detective bureaus for towns the size of Dover Twp have about 6 total detectives handling probably a thousand cases..The state police I work out of covers 4 large Townships which have no local police. Plus the Troopers handle all the state and interstate highways as well in that particular area. We have 3 detectives. Thats it. And a normal day of manpower to cover all those towns and highways is about 8 total guys. So before you make ASSUMPTIONS and quote nonsense and statistics think about what you are actually saying. Trenton City just laid off 80 cops. Thats one third of their force. How many crimes you think are gonna get solved in a Crime Ridden City with a grossly understaffed force? This is the same scenario that is playing out all across America in every city and town with the current economical times. You shouldnt really speak of things you know nothing about. This thread is about Belmar cops who ticketed surfers and you're opening up Pandoras box. You obviously have an axe to grind with the police........On a more positive vibe I caught some sick rights coming off of Casino Pier this morning. Hope everyone got some.
NJ, I don't think you get it. If GoodVibes sues the city for his broken ribs & wins, it very well could effect the law in regards to surfing. If he sues and loses), it still costs the city hundreds of thousands for legal representation. After a few cases (wins or losses, it won't be long until the laws get even more stupid. It only takes one win to make a legal precidence & start a trend. Sometimes, it just takes wide media coverage of a loss. Seriously, if the issue of "stupid laws" or their enforcement upsets anyone this much, they should be loudly protesting the at the next ridiculous injury or wrongful death civil case. Not at the beach during a hurricane or on a surfing forum. Don't forget to yell obscenities at the sueing client. Cops enforce the law...not make it.
I'm failing to see youre point its not like cops go out there saying im gonna solve this crime and not this one. You can't solve every crime, brudda
Lol,1)Well Right now Goodvibes feels like suing myself.I got my hospital bill and so far it was $27,000 and still counting. I need more Xrays before I get back to work.Im hoping my insurance pays most of this.2)Lets just call that wave waist high instead of Knee high.(to make me feel better).I would never even think about suing the town.It was just a FREAKY thing that happened.Heck,I can't even blame myself.3)It was 4 broken ribs.
Ya,I can see both sides of this arguement.I was shooting not to far from here in a nearby town and the surfers were asked to leave around 9:30 which I thought was fair.At least they were surfing up until that point.I didn't see anyone argue. It seemed like both sides were happy. You have to understand one thing about Belmar. Its just such a high profile town.Channel 2 and 4 were there that Saturday. As far as the surfers go they were probably just amped up ready to charge and doing something they love so its really hard to control your emotions sometimes. Its just a really grey area.
This has been the first time that they closed the beaches prior to a hurricane in cm. I recall hurricanes where is was bigger a day or two before the storm compared to this hurricane and life guards and cops sat up at the entrance to a southern spot in cm and just watched the show happen. in wildwood i was surfing with a couple of the guards who patrole those beaches. last friday beaches close for shoulder high waves????? I understand to purpose of laws and ordincences but I have to say the hype scared the town officals. Sunday I surfed OH waves in NWW with lifeguards while the beaches were still "closed".
http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7377699n I will look for more data or complete the calculations tomorrow for you.
Bottom line. Ridiculous law suits scare the town. The town make sure no one is in the water by informing the cops to do so. (They dont do it in the winter because way less tourist, and colder water will keep them out anyway, and let the surfers surf). The cops are following orders from there boss, and at the same time being mocked, degraded, and forced to write these "attention starved" morons a ticket.
that's EXACTLY my point...& the next thing you know (as i said previously), chest high will be considered "too dangerous". are you really ok w/ that? i'm not. i don't want someone telling me what size surf i'm "allowed" to surf at what time of the year. it's BS & if they try it, i can assure you that i would be doing the same thing as the guys in the video (albeit w/out the fanfare...that's just not my style).
They should scare everyone and not be tolerated. Here's an example, my wife had some abdominal discomfort about ten years ago. It was a holiday weekend and we went to the hospital they couldn't find anything abnormal in the tests so they said it wasn't anything serious and sent her home with some mild pain meds. She was fine for 2 days when she felt sick again and went back in. Turns out it was her appendix and she had to go right in and get it out. She was fine and back on her feet in a few days. We are not people to put blame on anyone so we were happy they figured it out and took care of it so no big deal. You would be amazed at the leaches, even in our own family that wanted us to sue over this. We said "what more could they have done, open her up on that first day to get a better look?". All of the bloodwork was normal so WTF? Everyone gave the excuse that we should sue to save the next person from the same "MISTAKE?". We believed that there was no mistake and the issue was taken care of as it should have been, but to these other scavengers the fact that they didn't find it on the first day was justification for a massive suit that would have put us on easy street for the rest of our lives. It changed the way I thought of those family members and it should change the way you think of anyone who files a lawsuit for greed, frivolous lawsuits hurt everyone and it's a big part of the reason these poor cops have to try and enforce rediculous regulations.
I hope the individuals ridiculing the Police on this forum actually need their help one day. The surfers in this video are morons for numerous reasons. Have you considered the Police are only carrying out orders that help the collective good & when idiot surfers do this, they are pulling valuable resources that could have cost a life somewher else? They dont do this in the winter because there is obviously no order to do so. Grow up!
i don't WANT to "get it." that sort of police state, "it's for your own good" bs will never sit well w/ me...who are they to tell me what's for my own good, esp. in regards to the ocean? do they know me? no...i'm a better waterman than most people in the water on any given day (not a better surfer. a better waterman. there is a difference) & certainly better than most (if not all) non-surfing police officers. if we were talking about apprehending a criminal, then yes, i'll happily bow to them. that's where their skill lies. if that's what you want, to live in your safe little cocoon w/ the nanny-state police officers telling you when you can & can't surf, go for it. enjoy your soft-top & safe, flexible fins too. me? i prefer to take a bit of a risk, even if that means working w/out a net much of the time. if that means i wind up a "criminal" or whatever...then so be it. i'd rather do the right thing than the correct thing in unjust situations. oh, & Topo, i don't think anyone in this thread was bad-mouthing cops beyond a few morons on the first page. i certainly never did...

NJSurfer, When the thread starts off with expletives directed at Police Officers, I take great offense. Read the reply a few back from the Surfer that actually is a Police Officer. I will concede this latest storm was OK for seasoned surfers to handle. Police are simply carrying out orders that cannot take everyones abilty in an emergency.
Andrew, its not about "too much" work. Trust me, I'm sure if YOUR job whatever it may be was "out there" for all to criticize we could come up with some pretty fun things to say about your occupation and how screwed up it is or how many A-holes work there. Its just typical. Anyway, I'm done with this thread because talking to people like you is a waste of time. When you get a chance, look up Trooper Marc Castellano. He was a good friend of mine. Tell his mom when you see her that her son didnt get all his work done like you do every day.
Wow I love these quotes! Live by these rules and this country will be back on track. In the last 20 years so many freedoms have been lost or given up for securities sake and too many people think they can count on the government and lawyers to protect them. These kids were demonstrating nonviolent civil disobedience they should be applauded for pushing back rather than sitting by and taking it. Like njsurfer said knowone, other than a few at the beginning of this post are bashing the cops. An attempt to portray anyone who sides with the surfers as anti cop/law enforsement is more of the same political correctness that has been silencing freedom of speech by branding people who disagree as unappreciative of the sacrifices made by the police force and their families. The problem is with the policies of the towns rather than the poor souls caught in the middle trying to enforce them.
