Haha you guys making this into a horror movie script are a hoot and a piss! :)
Here's what it is - I own two WRVs (my funboard I got new and an old shortboard I got off eBay local pick up) and I put a down-payment toward having a custom stick made for me...so what? Is it really affecting you? You jealous? Are you simply rude because this is the only place in your world where you have any power (the internet)? Were you abused as a child (I pray you were not), or are you some bitter teenager or emotionally immature adult who can't help yourself to succeed to own nicer things in life?
Thanks to the mature people that get it. I do feel bad you have so many little brainless ones in here disturbing your fun. Peace out :)

How about if you were more in touch with your own feelings and discovered what compassion for others is like, you won't be so "weird out"? And I'm finding out that is the fault with most average people...they lost what its like to be close with each other and weird out so easily because of things like keeping their nose in a data phone after spending most the day making these :0 :) :D at others in cyberspace.

gruvi, don't be so defensive. Please re-read my post. a. I never said you weirded me out. b. I was backing you up on getting a new board. c. I tried to give you a bit of advice (tone down your approach) d. you were so busy being defiensive, you neglected to answer my inquiry about your custom board

I was just using your words, not being direct to you.
Okay specs you want. I will start with the funboard. 8 foot with lots of foam (like almost 23 x 3 1/8) with a squash tail. The shortboard is 6'3 with pointed nose and squash tail, too much rocker than I can imagine I'll ever be able to catch a wave or paddle out on, but I will try next week. The shortboard is 18 1/2 x 2 - 2 1/4, I don't remember exactly but its way lighter than my funboard. My custom is going to be an egg. Specs will be between a funboard and shortboard, most likely resembling a hybrid. Thanks for asking.

5'9 170 lean and can hold my own. Been athletic most of life, and don't abuse substances :) I'm a pisces and try to eat well. I care about others feelings over my own first usually at a fault. I like to collect vintage things and really like the outdoors mixed with quiet times in and out with my wife. No children unfortunatelly. I spend most waking hours working in a hospital. I took up surfing as a coping technique to overcome fears of the ocean and it worked.

But Capt, what I am learning from here is that surfer's are a judgmental bunch for the most part. And truth be told, that is an indicator of immaturity. If you call someone trying to keep comfortable in a new wetsuit, riding his new board in October, a kook. why does he have to be labeled that at all? At least he is trying to get better as a beginner and not just doing the surfing in the summer where we know the challenges are mushy small waves for most part. So I have a new wetsuit...sorry I didn't know I had to earn the right to wear one or maybe should have bought a used pissed up one instead? I got a new board when I entered the sport...sorry I didn't know I had to aspire to getting a new one after taking chances with a old worn out stick first when I can easily afford and flip a new board whenever I want and not care about a couple hundred dollar loss. These are things that mess my mind up about associating with the sport a bit, but I will still try to learn with or without friends that surf. For me there is too much crap being generated over a newcomer from some experienced folks and it comes with a mean spirit from some of you. If you can't let people be people and just ignore them if you can't say anything kind or helpful, you (not you Capt) are the one who is truly weird.

OK, TMI. Didn't need the singles ad.
Height and weight are important for board selection. Depending on the width and thickness of the 6'3" it should work for you someday.

Here's a nugget of surf knowledge for you: Often when asked to give board descriptions, surfers and shapers will give the following measurements: Length, width at widest point, width at one foot behind nose, width at one foot in front of the tail, and thickness. Many shapers will write this in pencil on the stringer. You probably don't have a good way to measure the thickness, but you can always guesstimate. Sometimes you don't get all the data points, but the more you get, the better picture you get of the planshape of the board.

Back to board selection. Given what you've said about your ability, you should stick to the 8' fun board unless you're out at a snappy break where the only way to get out would be duck diving. Actually, for now, you should probably avoid places where it is breaking really snappy. Find a spot with a more gradual slope to the bottom where the wave will be mushier. Something else you might want to try when paddling out on the funboard is a technique called "turning turtle" or "turtle rolling" (google that for some writeups) Most of the time on the east coast, you can get out on a funboard by just punching through, it's harder, but you can get there.
