Lol had to do it, long time user of swellinfo but finally just now signed up to post. So hey all, be gentle its my first time! LOL Am planning a mid winter trip to warmer waters and am wondering if anyone has a good suggestion on where to go, I must say the ad for costa rica on here has got me interested if the locals will all be that fine!
Central America has so many choices, almost too many. And yes the Carib side when working is insane! Gruvi, you are like our special needs younger brother we never had before.
First post and already a gruvi sighting! But im looking for specific recommendations, a nice consistent right and a sandy bottom and polite locals would be prefered, I've never travelled to surf unless couple hr trips north/south count, friends of mine (I missed trip) went to nicaragua told me never again.
nicaragua is a summer spot... I would recommend the north or central Costa Rica coasts. Go here for some places to stay - Costa Rica Surf Trips
I know a cpl guys who go to PR mid winter and have a blast and never get skunked outa waves . They alway get good waves then they r there
definitely recommend Puerto Rico. its mostly reef and point breaks but there are a few sand bottoms that i know of in rincon. locals are okay in most places, watch out for the boogie boarders though. there's almost always waves in the winter there and its fairly close by, so i love it
right or left.... in CR the carib side is definitely rougher in terms of crime etc. seasonal conditions will tell you which side works for you though. your local surf shop may carry a paperback book that is actually a pretty comprehensive guide to CR and other locales...cheap too
Ya, Puerto Rico is definitely a good option as well. Rincon is the land of right point breaks, but can go through some dry spells even in the middle of winter. Puerto Rico Surf Trips
yes lots of rights in rincon. im actually goofy but i don't mind going right when the waves are good. definitely check out swellinfo's link, and here's another good one http://www.surfline.com/travel/index.cfm?id=2726
I second the costa rica idea. place is absolutely beautiful and there's waves all year there pretty much. another plus is it's really cheap so US dollars will go a lot farther down there. If I ever get enough money to travel there, i'm gone...
If ya choose CR, I've received E-mails as it seems some super savings rates being offered now for flights to San Jose or Liberia for under $300 through 2012. This site might be helpful to you and surfer reviews on hotels, Etc. http://www.crsurf.com/
My recommendation is the Hawaii of the east coast (Puerto Rico). It's still a US territory so no passport needed and if something goes down you have your rights! Rincon is a great place and odds are you will meet people from the east coast down there if you go in the winter (maybe even some folks from swellinfo). Good choice of waves and DON'T shy away from a reef break. You can get plenty of sandy bottom around here. Reef is one of the main reasons to travel. If you're afraid for your feet just get some 3 mm reef booties and you're golden!
Costa Rica is awesome. I just went for the first time in early August to Nosara. We rented a house - very affordable route if you're not into the whole hotel thing and have a group. Chest to head high waves every day were a 5 minute walk from our house. I think it's a bit more expensive in the winter because that's the dry season there (Nov - Apr). From what I hear it's got pretty consistent swell year round. Very chill atmosphere with super nice locals. Also, the country is just beautiful. Can't wait to get back there.
