was wondering the same thing myself...

my vision isn't "horrible"....so i just go sans glasses and do the best i can. It does make it a bit hard to tell how big the swells are. I fairly often mistake something small for something bigger and vice versa -- its really hard to tell until the swell is about 10ft from me.

$19.99 I have used these for swimming in the past and they work fine. You just need to know what strength to get. If you don't know you can call your eye doc. The only problem is, if one eye is worse than the other you can only get them in the same strength, unless you buy two and split them.

I wear contacts in the water. I just had my eyes examined and the Doc yelled at me and told me not to do that.

 

I have who is legally blind (I'm not being a wiseass, she really is legally blind) and she wears Sea Specs when she surfs. They are kind of goggle-like, but at least she can see.

And GROSS to wearing contacts in the water. Do you know what's lurking around East Coast water? Gaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh. Granted freshwater is much more disgusting in many ways, but still - saltwater has it's share of filth.

 

Oh and duh, I wear the regular non-Rx ones because I have retinal disease in one of my eyes - great stuff and polarized, too - good for finding the margins of currents and everything.

 

Been doing it for 30 years and it has worked out so far.

 

I wore contacts in the ocean for years and never had any problems--except for losing the occasional lens.

I don't wear contacts anymore but I'm -7.00 nearsighted and I can't just go surfing 'blind', I can't see a wave until it's right on top of me. What I do now is wear my old glasses--they've got Transitions lenses so they darken up in the sun and look like sunglasses--with one of those retainer straps--called 'Croakies'. You can get them online or maybe in a local surf shop.

Of course, I bodyboard. I don't know if I'd want to wear glasses like that with a surfboard, which is a lot harder than a bodyboard if it hits you in the face. When these glasses get broken I'll probably get a pair of the Seaspecs, too.

 

Referring to contact lenses: The saline solution that the doctors give is basically sterile saltwater.... I don't see what the big deal is if you wear them in the ocean or not. You're still gonna get seawater in your eye at some point. I have been doing it since I was a kid.
