Hey, So I'm new here! Been surfing for several years mostly on logs and fun boards but, I get out almost every week and almost year round here in Jersey.... I'm 6' and about 160lbs Right now I'm on a 6'10 X 21 3/4' X 2 7/8" Been riding it a lot for almost a year now. I like it well enough. Love the extra float and how easy it is to paddle but, duck diving under the heavy stuff is a PIA and its pretty hard to go vertical on it....imposssible maybe.....I can turn, go rail to rail, got shacked twice but I really wanna be able to go vertical more. I was thinking like a 6'1 flyer or something. I'm not affraid of making such a big jump. I'll figure it out after a while. lol Also been looking at the 21-13 line. Seems like nice boards at a good price.... Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
There have been a bunch of people over the past few years ask this very question maybe try using the search buttom to see hwat ya come up with. But honestly i think the best board someone trying to come off a log and and move into a more performance oriented board should go with ROund Nose Fish. Not an old school type fish but a performance fishor a hybrid style shortboard. Something like the Lost Rocket, lost Round Nose Fish, Channel Islands Motorboat, something like that. Granted I would recommend going to your local shaper taking a sixer of good beer with you and talking to him about what you are wanting. I strongly recommend a wider type outline going about 2" longer than you are tall with single to double concave with vee off the tail, these bottom contours work great in smaller type surf (head high and under). I could break down all sorts of board types, rocker, fins, etc but your a begginer, your going to get your first real board, so start a relationship with a shaper so as you progress you can tell him what you are loving/hating fomr your board so the next one he can dial it in, after 3 or 4 boards, your boards will start to get unreal!!!!!!!! Listen to bushwood. Find a local shaper, bring your current board with you, sit down and talk about how you like to surf, where you surf, and what you think you want in a board. Keep an open mind. Listen to the shaper. Enjoy the magic. There is nothing like a board made with local knowledge to your own wants/needs/style/body. Tell us where you are, and we can recommend some names.
I'm in Oc Jersey. Wont a custom cost me an arm and a leg? Bushwood, not really coming off a log and what you described is kinda what I'm currently riding. A hybrid fish kinda thing. Its a Nolte if youre familiar with his shapes... Thanks for the advice so far guys!
No. Most customs will actually be cheaper than that off the shelf CI Flyer you might be looking at. If you search the forums, you'll see a lot of recommendations for shapers in NJ.
Dude if you're in OCNJ you gotta check out Brian Wynn, he makes sick boards and they are really affordable. Any local shaper will be cheaper than buying a board brand new off the racks in a shop, so going local will save you some cash as well. There are a lot of shapers near you though so use the search bar at the top of the forum and you'll find a long list of names to check out. I say get a quad fish. I started on a 7ft foam went to 6'8 tri fin. Then went to a 6'6 with a square tail tri fin. Then to 6'2 tri fin thruster. Then to a 5'10 fishcuit. Then to a brand new ashton 5'10 thruster trin fin. And then hopped back on the 5'10 fishcuit cause it was more fun then the rest. I think im gonna be stuck in the alternative shapes for a while now.
I have a pretty old school 6'1" 21" 3" single fin with a little rocker that I found in a trash can like 3 years ago. Very sick board. EXTREMELY ugly paint job. ridiculous amount of suncure and the first board I ever got shacked on. it handles pretty well even in some bigger surf and it does a crazy bottom turn. highly recommend something along those lines
What kind of 6'10 is it? I'm assuming it's some kind of big guy shortboard or stepup type shape. If that's the case, going down to a 6'6 will be a very smooth transition. Jumping down to a 6'2 hpsb will be a leap, and you can expect to struggle for a while until you get used to the reduced length and volume. But that or shorter is what most people your weight would ride. Getting a custom is a good idea. Your shaper will be able to tweak the thickness, rocker, planshape and length to get an ideal combination for you. Some boards off the rack might look like what you want, but after dropping a big chunk of change for a CI or Lost, you don't want to be looking to sell it after 5 sessions.

The speed you can paddle kind of makes up for the recovery time when turtle-rolling, etc. I can paddle twice as fast on my 7'2" than on my 5'6". Efficient duck-diving with slow paddling = Inefficient Turtle-roll with fast paddling.
Oh I know it can be done. Lopez didn't seem to have much of a problem... I guess it helps when your board is shaped like a missle...
