yo for anyone unaware of the SOPA/ PIPA acts they are practically trying to ruin the internet... our government is at it again to try and destroy our rights. Sign the petition to help stop SOPA/ PIPA on google. If you don't know anything about it wikipedia still works for sopa/pipa pages read it up. PS: google, aol, reddit, craigs list and a ton of other major companies openly expressed their rejection to the act! Lets help them out! http://vimeo.com/31100268
while i agree w/ you in sentiment here, you really need to work on your presentation skills. that much has been made clear to me via your posts in this & other threads.
..... sorry if i went all nerd on you this would be your reaction... WHAT THE HECK DOES THAT MEAN. Keeping it simple haha also the vid I posted has the best description of it but it can still confuse web noobs.
i mean that the profanity does nothing to help your case w/ those who might not know anything about these acts or be initially inclined to support them (i'm already against them & have signed several petitions). you're not going to sway anyone's opinion via profanity. only through clear, precise, well-reasoned arguments. belittling people doesn't make them want to change their minds, it just makes them cling even harder to their beliefs. & before you say that i belittled you, i was simply offering a bit of advice. THAT'S what i mean.
Uhh.. I'm one of those nerdy guys who works with computers and has a whole bunch of tech degrees and honestly you don't want this passed. It's going to make the internet less secure than it already is and will shut down major companies like Google, Yahoo, Ask, Bing, Facebook, Twitter, the list goes on and on. Pretty much the government is proposing to censor the internet by blocking the nameservers to domains that contain illegal downloads. They are making the search engines and social media networks responsible for what is posted on them. So for example if this gets passed and I posted an illegal link to a site on these forums the US government could sue Swell Info for having that link I posted on these forums. A quick example... So if you tried to go to www.google.com and google was block it simply wouldn't load. But if you typed in the IP to the hostname google is running off of, so like 172.23.42.12, you could still get on google. Pretty much they are just trying to make it more complicated to pirate stuff and by being lazy they resorted to the easy way which won't work at all and just kill our internet. If it passes it would give the government full power over internet regulation... We would be like China. It's really confusing if anyone is interested in it send me a pm I will explain it more in depth.
First indefinite detention and now this. WAKE UP SHEEPLE! YOUR FREEDOMS ARE BEING TAKEN IN THE NAME OF "SECURITY"
I am going to act like the government and pull the old...until it happens, I am going to sit back and relax
It would be a pretty serious issues. Think about the world without google..... There would be a bunch of websites and no way to find them. The only way would be through person to person contact. No one would openly run forums, bb's or even social networking sites. The risks would be too high. You would practically be trusting a random person with your money.... Oh and if you get caught with something like this to top it off after losing tons of money you could serve 5+ years in prison....
lethargy is not how the gov't does things, at least not when it comes to "security". w/ the patriot act & others, the people we send to washington have shown time & again that they will use every opportunity to try to strip away our rights. we cannot afford to stand idly by & watch any longer.
Yes...and by "I", I mean I am going to sit back and relax. Feel free to protest, hold signs, and not make a difference by yelling, shouting, standing outside of governement buildings, getting pepper sprayed like the those college students, making online petitions, or other such things that never seem to ever work. I am sure you will manage to find some petition that happened to work and make a minimal difference, but honestly the government will do what they feel like doing.
last time i checked, we lived in a representative democracy & those don't function w/out the input of its citizens. my efforts may not be as effective as i'd like, but doing nothing would be even less effective.
It's true if you just sit back and do nothing the chance of this bill passing increases tremendously. Now with big players like Google, Wikipedia, Yahoo, AOL, Reddit, Facebook taking actions our littler actions to support these big companies actually has a great effect. We honestly can't personally community with the government but I bet you the CEO of google can. Think of it this way, if we did nothing the CEO of google would show up with his letter saying he doesn't like the law. If we try to help him now the CEO of google shows up with his letter, 1000000000000 signatures, plus other major companies that support the veto of the bill as well. What one is more effective? I would go with the 2nd one haha.
of course option 2 would be more effective. but superfish is talking about doing nothing. that's just stupid & dangerous.
Haha I feel you. The only thing I did today was make phone calls, sign petitions, and write letters to government officials and various companies bashing the SOPA/ PIPA. Having a tech job comes with those advantages haha, well at least mine does.
2 thumbs up. I spent the $.25 and called my congressman too. Anyone reading this let me know and I will send you a quarter to call your representative to tell them to oppose the bill.(For those lethargic people, this way you don't even have to leave the couch.)
I am not saying everyone should do nothing. I am saying that I am going to do nothing because I do not feel like doing something. Feel free to do whatever your heart desires. Just remember politics are politics for a reason...phone calls won't necessarily change things unless money talks (minus the 0.25 cents). Politicians are inspired/motivated by money and future career positions.
